Staff Accountant (Hybrid)

S&ME is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Staff Accountant to join our Finance team at our headquarters in Raleigh, North Carolina.

This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional who enjoys solving problems, taking ownership of their work, and partnering with teams across the business. We're looking for someone who is equally comfortable working independently and collaborating with colleagues, someone who is curious, proactive, and driven to continuously learn and grow their accounting expertise.

This role offers flexibility to work from home with 3 days spent in the office each week.

What You Will Do:

As a Staff Accountant, you will play a key role in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of S&ME's financial records while supporting monthly close activities, financial reporting, compliance requirements, and operational accounting functions. You'll work closely with accounting leadership and business partners across the organization to analyze financial information, resolve discrepancies, and ensure compliance with GAAP.

Responsibilities

• Account Reconciliations and Journal Entries: Conduct account reconciliations and prepare journal entries to ensure accurate financial records.
• Tax Filings and Compliance: Handle local tax filings, prepare annual property tax returns, and file sales and use tax returns.
• General Ledger and Period-End Close: Manage general ledger accruals and oversee period-end and month-end close processes.
• Financial Reporting and Analysis: Contribute to financial reporting, analysis, and projections, and support the annual budgeting process.
• Support and Training: Provide financial support and training to various team members, develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures, and address discrepancies with senior management.
• Accounts Payable: Process invoices for assigned accounts, including routing, coding, and reviewing invoices for accuracy and proper approval prior to payment. Collaborate with vendors and internal teams to resolve discrepancies, obtain necessary corrections, and ensure timely processing of payments. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
• Minimum 3 years of progressive accounting experience with general ledger responsibilities.
• Strong understanding and practical application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
• Experience preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and financial analyses.
• Experience with month-end close and financial reporting processes.
• Proven ability to analyze financial data and reconcile complex accounts.
• Demonstrated ability to manage priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently.
• A proactive mindset with a desire to learn, grow professionally, and continuously improve processes.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience within construction, engineering, architecture, consulting, environmental, professional services, or project-based organization.
• Experience supporting multi-location operations.
