Job Description

The Staff Accountant is responsible for performing a variety of general accounting functions in support of the organization's financial reporting and accounting operations. This position plays an important role in the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, including general ledger maintenance, journal entries, account reconciliations, financial analysis, and preparation of supporting schedules and reports.

The Staff Accountant will analyze financial information, investigate account variances and discrepancies, and assist in ensuring the accuracy and completeness of the company's financial records. The position will work closely with the CFO, Controller, and other members of the Accounting Department, as well as external auditors and other third-party professionals as needed.

Today, Replacement Parts, Inc. and Crow Burlingame are made up of a corporate staff, wholesale auto parts and automotive paint store locations, and our warehouse division, Parts Warehouse Inc. (PWI). We employ approximately 1,400 employees, in twelve (12) states, working at approximately 220 locations, all operating in the aftermarket automotive parts, paint, and heavy-duty parts business. Essential Duties and Responsibilities for Staff Accountant

Month-End Close

  • Assist with the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process.
  • Prepare and post recurring, adjusting, and accrual journal entries.
  • Review general ledger activity for accuracy and completeness.
  • Assist with the preparation of monthly financial statements and management reports.

Reconciliations & Analysis

  • Perform monthly reconciliations of assigned general ledger accounts.
  • Research and resolve discrepancies between subsidiary ledgers and the general ledger.
  • Analyze account fluctuations and investigate significant or unusual variances.
  • Identify trends, inconsistencies, and potential errors and communicate findings to management.
  • Maintain detailed documentation supporting account balances and reconciliations.

Internal Controls

  • Assist in monitoring and improving accounting procedures and internal controls.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting accuracy, and operational efficiency.
  • Assist with implementation and documentation of accounting policies and procedures.

Audit & Tax

  • Prepare schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation for external audits and financial reviews.
  • Assist with quarterly and annual tax reporting and compliance activities.
  • Work with external auditors and other third-party professionals to provide requested information and resolve questions.

Business/Management Support

  • Provide accounting analysis and financial information to management as requested.
  • Assist with special projects, financial analysis, and process-improvement initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain Excel-based reports and analyses to support accounting and operational decisions.

Organization & Time Management - Effectively manages multiple deadlines associated with monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.

Attention to Detail - Maintains a high degree of accuracy in financial records and reporting.

Analytical Thinking – Collects, analyzes, and interprets financial information; identifies trends, discrepancies, and unusual activity; and researches underlying causes.

Qualifications Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • One (1) to three (3) years of accounting experience preferred.
  • Experience with general ledger accounting, journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end close preferred.
  • Experience in a multi-location, distribution, wholesale, retail, manufacturing, or construction-related environment is a plus.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of accounting software and the Microsoft Office suite of products. Strong Microsoft Excel skills are required, including the ability to work with formulas, sorting, filtering, and pivot tables. 10-key proficiency is required.
