Staff Accountant

Department: Finance

Program: Accounting

Reports to: Accounting Manager

Employment Status: Full-time

FLSA Status: Exempt

Schedule: 40 Hours/52 Weeks

Preference: TERO Ordinance 2017-01, P.L. 93-638

The Staff Accountant, under the supervision of the Accounting Manager, is responsible for fixed assets and capital projects accounting, general ledger accounting, month-end close, indirect costs allocation, and annual financial audit rediness.

Essential Functions

  • Maintain fixed assets schedules and reconcile to the general ledger
  • Calculate and record monthly depreciation expenses
  • Track work in progress expenses for capital projects
  • Manage indirect cost allocations and assist with the annual indirect cost proposal
  • Manage grants receivable and deferred revenue allocations for grant funded programs
  • Reconcile assigned general ledger accounts
  • Prepare adjusting journal entries
  • Responsible for the month-end close process in accounting software
  • Provide support and review for A/P, Payroll, and A/R accounting functions
  • Prepare bank cash deposits
  • Assist with the preparation of work papers and supporting schedules for the annual financial audit
  • Ensures compliance with Tribal, federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, Tribal policies and TERO ordinance

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration or a combination of education and experience in a related field may be substituted for a degree
  • Three (3) years of relevant work experience may be substituted for Bachelor's degree

Experience

  • Three (3) years of experience as a staff accountant, auditor, financial analyst or a similar role

Preferred

  • Concentration in Accounting
  • Knowledge and experience working with cultural diversities

License/Certification

  • Must have a valid Alaska State driver's license and must remain insurable under the Tribe's policy , or obtain within 90 days of hire, or, with approval of the hiring manager, sign a *Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in lieu of having a driver's license to perform the required duties of the position (If Applicable )

About Kenaitze Indian Tribe

The Kenaitze Indian Tribe was federally recognized as a sovereign, independent nation in 1971 under the Indian Reorganization Act as amended for Alaska. Today, we have more than 2,100 tribal members who live across the Kenai Peninsula and beyond. We employ more than 400 full-time and part-time employees.

The Tribe delivers a variety of programs and services that promote the wellness of our people and the community. In 2014, we opened the 52,000-square-foot Dena’ina Wellness Center, a fully integrated healthcare facility offering a wide range of services beneath one roof. We also operate a tribal justice system, education services, an Elders center, a social services program, and more.

At our Annual General Council Meeting every October, we elect members to the Executive Council to serve staggered terms. The seven-member Council governs the Tribe in accordance with our constitution, by-laws, ordinances and resolutions. It appoints a Chief Judge to oversee Tribal Court and uphold tribal laws, as well as an Executive Director to manage the Tribe’s day-to-day operations.

In fall 2015, we plan to open Tułen Charter School in partnership with the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District. The school will teach Dena'ina language, values and culture to kindergarten through third-grade students.

Our funding comes from federal, state and private grants, as well as third-party revenue generated by our healthcare programs.

It’s been thousands of years since our people, the Kahtnuht’ana Dena’ina, first inhabited the Kenai Peninsula. We call this area Yaghanen, the good land. After many challenges throughout the years, today we are proud to say Naqantugheduł – the tide is coming in. We say the tide is coming in because it’s an exciting time for the Tribe and our people as we continue to work toward our Vision: To assure Kahtnuht’ana Dena’ina thrive forever.
