A Day in the Life

The Staff Accountant will report to the Assistant Controller and will assist the finance team in preparing month-end reconciliations, processing payroll, reviewing financial statements against budgets, cost analysis and other ad hoc projects. They will support the maintenance of the general ledger and the monthly accounting cycle. Knowledge of US and/or Canadian GAAP and an ability to adhere to all internal standards is required This position ensures that accounting transactions are properly recorded, posted, processed, and reported for accurate presentation of the financial statements; responds to internal escalations and ensures compliance with internal financial and accounting controls; helps coordinate activities that support the preparation of monthly and annual financial reports, and monitors general ledger maintenance and monthly accounting processing activities to ensure thoroughness and accuracy.

What You’ll Bring to the Role:

  • Knowledge of US and/or Canadian GAAP and application of accounting principles
  • Advanced excel skills; ability to set-up and effectively use accounting software, spreadsheets, etc. to perform data analysis
  • Analytical and strong problem-solving skills
  • Must be detail-oriented, have a proactive approach and the ability to work with a team
  • Ability to investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies
  • Must be able to prioritize tasks and effectively manage and meet deadlines
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision

The Must Haves:

  • Degree in Finance/Accounting
  • Minimum 2 years of experience of general accounting, auditing corporate finance experience and/or other transferrable functions
  • Advanced MS Excel, Word and Outlook skills
  • Payroll experience is not required
  • Must have physical ability to carry out essential job functions, including but not limited to, sitting for long periods of time, occasionally walking and standing, climbing ladders/stairs, and tolerating conditions such as dust, dirt, noise, odors, heat, cold, etc. when stepping into the warehouse

Things You Will be Doing

  • General ledger accountability – research and respond to general ledger questions/inquiries
  • Complete balance sheet month-end reconciliations, reconciling general ledger activity for the month
  • Update and maintain daily bank reconciliations for multiple banks; ensure accurate and timely payments and postings
  • Maintain necessary working papers related to journal entries and reconciliations
  • Work cross-functionally to compile or validate financial data for monthly reporting as needed to ensure accurate and timely period end reporting
  • Assist on an as needed basis with AP and AR. This includes entering invoices for payment, processing check runs, assisting with AP approvals, performing billing, recording cash receipts, and processing claims.
  • Ability to interact with internal and external personnel to obtain financial data
  • Assist in month-end and year-end closing procedures and financial statement reporting in accordance with US and/or Canadian GAAP
  • Assist in the preparation of internal and external audit schedules
  • Ability to work in multiple foreign currencies, such as CAD and USD
  • Prepare journal entries, financial statement support schedules and management reports
  • GL reporting and expense analysis
  • Assist with oversight and adherence to internal controls
  • Provide Backup for other accountants
  • Other ad hoc and/or finance related assignments
