Job Description

The Staff Accountant provides support for the daily financial activities of the department and College, including preparation of journal entries, general ledger account reconciliations, deposit processing, and assistance with reporting, audits, and compliance.


Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:
  • Complete assigned tasks to achieve timely closings (monthly, quarterly, annual) and reconciliations.
  • Record required journal entries.
  • Process monthly gift postings; reconcile to Institutional Advancement records in Raiser’s Edge (subledger).
  • Reconcile all investment accounts, including endowment funds for two separate entities.
  • Receipt and process all vault, mailed, and in-person bank deposits.
  • Review accounts for coding and other errors; investigate accounting errors; research transactions, resolve problems; monitor balances.
  • Support the preparation of reports, surveys, financial statements and other documents for federal, state and outside agencies, and for internal departments.
  • Assist with the annual external audit, including responses to independent auditor requests (e.g., provide information, explain supporting materials and procedures, prepare and compile necessary data).
  • Respond to inquiries from departments concerning expenditure activity and coding, restricted and endowment balance questions, petty cash requests, and other accounting related activities.
  • Support the Budget Director with budget inquiries and process budget adjustments as needed.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelors Degree required, preferably in accounting or finance.
  • Up to three years of experience in accounting or finance-related position.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting systems and Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Access).
  • Knowledge of finance, accounting, and cost control principles including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with staff at all levels throughout the organization, create and promote a positive, supportive, and customer-centric work environment.
  • Ability to define problems, collect and analyze data, and make strategic recommendations.
  • A strong ability to maintain confidential information and use discretion.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to function independently while operating effectively within a team environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Masters degree and/or CPA preferred.
  • Higher education experience or not-for-profit experience a plus.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position primarily works in a standard office environment and requires regular use of a computer and office equipment. The role involves extended periods of sitting, reviewing detailed financial information, and communicating with departments across the College. Additional time-sensitive work will be required during month-end, year-end, audit periods, or other high-volume reporting cycles.
