Job Description

ING aims to lead the low-carbon transition by embedding sustainability at the core of its strategy. The Sustainable Solutions Group (SSG) drives the Wholesale Banking sustainability agenda, linking sustainable finance expertise with sector strategy, client engagement, portfolio steering and risk-informed decision-making.

Within SSG, SSG-FI leads the strategic, commercial and risk sustainability agenda for Financial Institutions. The team supports client transition dialogue, sector steering and origination, with a key focus this year on making sustainability a stronger differentiator for clients and for ING’s FI franchise.

The role is posted in the Netherlands but can be fulfilled in other locations provided FI and/or SSG has significant presence there.

The SSG- FI team

The SSG FI team works across sector coverage, product partners, risk, and regional SSG teams to align strategy and execution. It combines sector insight, sustainability expertise and practical delivery to position sustainability as both a business enabler and a risk discipline.

(Shared) Key responsibilities of the SSG-FI team

  • Strategy: Shape and implement the FI sustainability strategy, translating priorities across climate, nature, energy transition, ESG risk, client engagement and portfolio steering into clear sector action.
  • Sustainability transition steering: Drive sector steering on client transition needs, transition plans and progress tracking, while integrating social, nature, energy transition, and broader sustainability considerations where relevant.
  • Client engagement and commercial opportunities: Support FI clients on transition and sustainability-led dialogue, while helping identify commercial opportunities across sustainable finance, advisory and product solutions.
  • Client research and pitch support: Conduct market, client and sustainability research and prepare tailored sustainability content for client pitches and origination efforts.
  • Transaction structuring and sustainability advisory: Advise on the sustainability angle of relevant deals, including KPI selection, ambition levels, sustainability features and wording, to support credible and commercially relevant transactions.
  • Risk management and governance: Translate ESG regulation and disclosure developments into practical guidance, governance and risk actions, including transition, greenwashing and reputational risk.
  • Thought leadership and capability building: Build sustainability capability across the FI franchise through insight, training and practical guidance, while strengthening ING’s market perspective and credibility.

Strategic challenges

You will help embed sustainability into the FI sector agenda in a fast-changing market and regulatory environment. This requires strategic judgment, practical execution and the ability to turn complex sustainability and governance topics into clear actions for teams and clients.

The required skills we seek

  • Strategic mindset: Strong sustainability affinity, strategic thinking and pragmatic execution, with the ability to spot commercial relevance and competitive advantage.
  • Sector and product knowledge: Strong understanding of the FI sector, key client dynamics and banking products relevant to sustainable business generation.
  • Commercial drive: Ability to turn sustainability themes into relevant client dialogue and business opportunities.
  • Communication and collaboration: Clear, credible communication across stakeholders, with the ability to translate strategy into action.
  • Execution skills: Comfortable moving between strategy and delivery, using presentations, reporting, tools and data to support progress.
  • Analytical strength: Strong data analysis, risk assessment and metric-based steering; ESG and transition assessment experience is a plus.
  • Stakeholder engagement: Able to build trust, influence outcomes and represent sustainability topics with credibility.
  • ING’s Values: Strong commitment to ING’s Orange Code values and behaviors, ING’s Global Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging strategy

Your required experience

We are seeking an expert sector with strong FI knowledge, clear sustainability affinity and the ability to combine commercial instinct, strategic thinking and collaboration in a practical, forward-looking way.

  • Experience in the FI sector (in any sub sector segment Banks, Insurance, Financial Sponsors Groups), ESG and broader sustainability topics or structuring and supporting financial products functions.
  • Good understanding of ING and Wholesale Banking products, processes and governance, or the ability to build this quickly.
  • 5+ years of relevant financial industry experience, ideally international, with strong stakeholder management and exposure to sustainability, strategy or client engagement.
  • Excellent command of English, both written and spoken.
  • Strong working knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint and Word; reporting and data tool experience is a plus.
  • Proactive, self-driven and structured.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage complex processes and stakeholders across functions and geographies.
  • Strong delivery focus and ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-moving environment.
