Job Description

This C1 12 month maternity cover post offers the chance to work at the heart of government, responsible for the development and delivery of a range of corporate legislative programmes. The post holder will have the opportunity to develop their leadership, management, briefing, continuous improvement, programme management and political acuity skills.

The post-holder post will be responsible for supporting management of the Scottish Government’s programme of SSI, LCMs and Scotland Act Orders, and will work with colleagues in Cabinet Secretariat to deliver the business of the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Legislation. The SSI and UK Legislation Team sits within Parliament and Legislation Unit and provides advice to officials across Government about the development and delivery of legislation, and supports the Minister for Parliamentary Business in discharging his responsibilities for delivering Government business in parliament. This is a challenging, fast-paced and high profile post with regular exposure to senior managers and Ministers. A key feature of this post is the need to be able to demonstrate pace and precision and a high level of political acuity in dealing with day to day parliamentary handling issues whilst also being able to plan strategically across the parliamentary session.

Responsibilities

  • Leading your team to provide first class support to the Minister for Parliamentary Business and Veterans, other Ministers and officials engaged in the delivery of legislation.
  • Robust and proportionate PPM of statutory instrument, legislative consent and Scotland Act Order programmes.
  • Strong political acuity to support rapid day to day decisions on parliamentary handling issues, and to support strategic planning for your programmes.
  • Contribute to the strong culture of continuous improvement in Parliament and Legislation Unit within and outwith your own areas of responsibility.
  • Develop strong networks within (across your programmes and outwith (the Scottish Parliament, Scotland Office and wider UK Government) the Scottish Government.

Working pattern

This role is a temporary maternity cover position with an expected commitment of 12 months

Our standard hours are 35 hours per week and we offer a range of flexible working options depending on the needs of the role, including Flexi-leave. Scottish Government staff in hybrid-compatible roles should aim to work in-person 40% of the time, either in an office or other agreed work location.
