Our Excess & Surplus/Specialty (E&S/S) lines allow us to provide insurance that other carriers may not offer. It’s a fast-paced environment in a collaborative, team-oriented culture, working in an always-changing, growing industry.

Working with minimal supervision as a Senior Underwriting Assistant, you will provide in-depth technical and administrative support to underwriting and management staff. You will evaluate and review new and renewal policies for company compliance, produced by agents with binding authority. In addition, setting up and reviewing complex policies endorsements, cancellations and reinstatements for internal issuance are functions of this role. You will also review various other policy maintenance items for accuracy and refer for additional review or approval as required. You will be responsible for processing Broker of Record (BOR’s) letters and more complex inquiries from other departments. Corresponding with general agents, brokers or program managers for corrections and outstanding file documentation is expected. We will count on you to maintain positive business relationships with our general agents, brokers and program managers. You will have opportunities to participate in training new underwriting assistants and acting as a technical advisor to others on support processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Reviews individual risks or programs for company compliance from agents, brokers or program managers and determines acceptability of renewal business based upon prior policy information or requests additional information. Determines premium charge for the exposure, determines appropriate endorsements and exclusions per program guidelines or instructions from underwriter.

  • Confirms and compares pricing and binding conditions are met on new business submitted by agents, brokers and program managers and refers to Underwriter as necessary.

  • Reviews and handles more complex policy maintenance items, and other mid-term requests for the Underwriter. Reviews or prepares endorsement requests for issuance, and processes necessary changes to the policy. Reviews claim activity and refers to Underwriter as necessary. Evaluates inspections within established guidelines to ensure accuracy of premium basis and exposures. Corresponds with agents, brokers and program managers regarding inspectors' recommendations as necessary. Prepares Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) reviews, and performs underlying policy reviews comparing to the policy and noting all discrepancies for underwriting.

  • Reviews and follows up unsolved policy maintenance items by corresponding with general agent, broker or program manager and providing additional details on what is needed to solve issue.

  • Participates in training new Underwriting Assistants and acts as the technical advisor to Underwriting Assistants and support staff. Able to handle a heavier workload and is proactive in reaching out to peers when there is a need for additional support.

  • Completes peer and agency audit worksheets within defined company guidelines.

  • Assists with desk coverage for other Assistants or Underwriters. Recognizing the priority of a request to refer to a back-up Underwriter or Manager for handling.

  • Processes monthly reports on reporting policies per the terms of the policy.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to supervisor or manager.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate studies preferred.

License/Certification/Designation: Completion of general insurance courses such as IIA, AIS, AINS, AU, or ASLI is preferred.

Experience: Three years related experience or two years’ experience as an Underwriting Assistant preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Knowledge of business concepts. Ability to communicate with groups and individuals through telephone contact and in writing. Microsoft Office products and ability to function in network environment. Ability to think and problem solve within assigned guidelines. Prior exposure to Excess and Surplus operations is a plus as well as knowledge of the wholesale Broker system.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and HR Business Partner.
