Job Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Workflow Automation TPM owns the technology program that connects and streamlines operational workflows across Crane's core business domains — Freight Forwarding, Rating & Pricing, Sales & Marketing, Sustainability, and Ground/Warehousing. The immediate focus of this role is coordinating and implementing workflow automation projects across Freight Forwarding business operations, with the expectation that these patterns extend into other domains over time. Rather than owning a single domain vertically, this role works horizontally to identify where workflow, task-routing, and process logic can be centralized, standardized, and automated on the chosen workflow automation platform. You will partner with Freight Forwarding operations leadership, domain TPMs, engineering, and the platform team to design and deliver workflow automation projects end to end — from intake and requirements through configuration, testing, and rollout.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Product Design (the right business workflows)

Own the roadmap for workflow automation projects across Freight Forwarding business operations, covering intake, shipment execution, exception handling, and other process areas identified for automation. Conduct process discovery and stakeholder interviews with Freight Forwarding operations teams to map current-state workflows and identify where a centralized, platform-based approach outperforms manual or point-solution alternatives. Design future-state workflows and validate feasibility with mockups and proofs of concept before committing engineering and platform investment. Partner with domain-aligned TPMs to ensure workflow patterns proven in Freight Forwarding are reusable as automation extends to other business domains.

Technical Design (the right approach)

Define the system-level technical approach for workflow automation projects, including workflow configuration, form and task design, and integration points with Freight Forwarding operational systems. Own the technical approach for task routing, queueing, and exception-handling patterns within the chosen workflow automation platform, in partnership with engineering and the platform team, which own component-level configuration and delivery. Evaluate and recommend integration points between the workflow platform and domain systems (e.g., Cargo.one) and ensure workflow automation patterns follow consistent platform standards. Identify and resolve gaps between how Freight Forwarding operations work today and how the workflow is configured, escalating platform or capability gaps to engineering leadership.

Success (execution and measurement)

Define operational KPIs for workflow automation projects, such as task completion time, exception rates, manual touchpoints per shipment, and adoption of automated workflows across Freight Forwarding operations. Create measurement frameworks for each rollout, with particular emphasis on tracking adoption and impact as new workflows go live. Instrument experiments and evaluate automation impact rigorously, partnering with analytics and data science as needed. Drive adoption of workflow automation tooling through change management and internal enablement, working closely with Freight Forwarding operations leadership.

Cross-team Coordination

Build strong working relationships with Freight Forwarding operations leadership and regional teams, as well as domain leads and TPMs across Rating & Pricing, Sales & Marketing, Sustainability, and Ground/Warehousing. Serve as the primary voice for workflow automation within the TPM function and engineering, ensuring the platform reflects real Freight Forwarding operational needs rather than a one-size-fits-all assumption. Facilitate alignment across operations stakeholders when workflow priorities compete, and escalate trade-offs clearly to TPM and engineering leadership.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business Administration, or related field.
  • 8+ years of product management experience, with strong preference for candidates who have worked across multiple business functions or built shared/platform capabilities rather than single-domain products.
  • All TPM candidates must demonstrate:
    • Cross-team leadership experience across engineering, AI, data science, and business operations.
    • Comfort reading and writing code and working with modern application ecosystems (HTTP APIs, messaging and queueing systems).
    • Experience in Agile or Scrum environments.
    • Ability to build strong relationships across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Desirable: Prior experience implementing or administering a workflow automation platform (e.g., Pega, Camunda, or similar); experience with freight forwarding or logistics operations; prior experience building applications as an engineer or product manager; experience standing up a shared workflow capability used by multiple internal teams; change management experience for large operational teams.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Job requires the ability to use vision, adjust focus and work on a standard computer screen.
  • Job may require extended sitting or standing, use of standard office equipment.
  • Job will require presence on-site at the assigned work location.
  • Job requires attendance and dependability.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Must be eligible to work in the United States for any company in an ongoing capacity without company sponsorship

  • Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Cross-Functional Leadership & Technical Acumen:

Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functionally across multiple business domains, engineering, AI, and data science teams. Comfort reading and writing code; familiarity with modern application ecosystems including HTTP APIs, messaging and queueing systems, and typical software engineering patterns. Experience working in Agile or Scrum environments. Strong ability to build relationships across technical and non[1]technical stakeholders and translate between business requirements and technical constraints, particularly when reconciling competing domain priorities.

Domain and Measurement Expertise:

Hands-on experience with a workflow automation or BPM platform (e.g., Pega, Camunda, or similar), including workflow design, forms, and task-based automation; experience coordinating or implementing workflow automation projects strongly preferred. Experience designing workflow orchestration systems, task management platforms, or process automation tools, ideally applied within a freight forwarding or logistics operations context. Strong data orientation with the ability to define and instrument operational KPIs from scratch. Proven track record of creating meaningful measurement frameworks, especially during product rollouts and organizational change initiatives.

Communication and Organization:

Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate complex technical and operational concepts to diverse audiences, including senior stakeholders. Strong analytical skills with solid experience writing functional and technical specifications (PRDs). Strong organization skills with excellent attention to detail. Proficiency with product management tools, diagramming tools (Visio, Miro), and collaboration platforms. Ability to drive short-term actions consistent with long-term strategic goals. Effective listening skills and stakeholder empathy, especially when navigating competing domain interests.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE

  • Relevant certifications in project management (PMP, CSM) or product management (PSPO, PGSPO) are preferred.
