Job Description

The Senior Specialist will provide environment, health & safety (EH&S) field support to plant operations ensuring compliance with applicable EH&S regulations, programs, and procedures that are consistent with the Companys commitment to EH&S Excellence. The primary subject matter areas include: oil, chemical, water, waste, air, fire protection, asbestos and lead programs. The position will also support various safety programs associated with Operations.

This position does not provide employment pursuant to the terms of a STEM OPT Training Plan.

Core Responsibilities

  • Conduct compliance reporting, inspections and testing and complete incident investigation, program implementation, documentation, and provide project oversight.
  • Perform frequent field inspections and observations of operations, maintenance, and construction activities in progress to ensure safety, regulatory compliance and personnel use of sound EHS practices.
  • Present training to plant personnel in a variety of safety and environmental subject matter areas.
  • Conduct contractor environment, health and safety program (eHASP) reviews to ensure compliance with company policy and government regulations.
  • Review day to day operations and maintenance activities to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Review projects to ensure design and construction are completed in a matter that complies with applicable regulations.
  • Review and prepare permit renewals and submittals, maintains procedures and regulatory plans.
  • Perform other related tasks and assignments as required.

Required Education/Experience

  • Master's Degree in Safety, Engineering, Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biological Science and 2 years operating, maintenance or EH&S experience or
  • Bachelor's Degree in Safety, Engineering, Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biological Science and 3 years operating, maintenance or EH&S experience or
  • Associate's Degree in Safety, Engineering, Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biological Science and 5 years operating, maintenance or EH&S experience or
  • High School Diploma/GED and 6 years operating, maintenance or EH&S experience

Preferred Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline (Environmental Science, Safety, Engineering, Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics or Biological Science) and three (3) years' operating and maintenance experience of power generation facilities and minimum of (2) years experience EH&S related experience
  • Associate's Degree in a technical discipline

Relevant Work Experience

  • EH&S related work experience, required.
  • Minimum of two years documented work experience in regulatory compliance, environmental science, safety, industrial hygiene, chemistry, and/or waste management, required.
  • Operating and maintenance experience in power generation, preferred.

Skills and Abilities

  • Experience in a regulated environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to build strong customer relationships
  • Ability to influence internal and/or external constituents

Licenses and Certifications

  • Driver's License Required
  • Other: NYSDOL Asbestos Project Monitor certification, preferred.
  • Other: NYSDOL Asbestos Investigator certification, preferred.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to push, pull, and lift up to 40 pounds
  • Possess manual dexterity and the ability to use hands for the duration of the workday
  • Ability to stoop, bend, reach, and kneel throughout the workday

Additional Physical Demands

  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must stoop, bend, reach and kneel throughout the workday
  • Must be able and willing to travel within Company service territory, as needed
  • Position requires extensive walking, standing, stair and ladder climbing throughout the workday
  • Must be physically able to wear a respirator and work in difficult environments (heat, noise, high elevations and confined spaces)
  • Ability to respond to system emergencies
  • Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
