Primary Duties & Responsibilities
The Senior R&D Engineer is focused on developing, scaling up, and commercializing innovative hydrometallurgical processes for the recovery and purification of valuable metals, advancing processes from laboratory to pilot, and full-scale manufacturing. The work involves a broad range of application areas including equipment and engineering design, process development, material production, material characterization, and life cycle assessments.
He/she operates with competence and independence in the execution of all design calculations, design criteria, in the compilation and execution of equipment lists and calculations. He/she develops new criteria/calculations where required, maintaining high levels of accuracy. He/she:
- Defines the process block flow diagrams and unit operations,
- Compiles process flow diagrams along with associated mass and energy balance calculations,
- Undertakes trade off studies to resolve options,
- Identifies, scopes, and manages process test work,
- Conducts capacity analysis for existing plants,
- Selects the recommended equipment for projects,
- Carries out engineering design calculations and equipment sizing calculations,
- Ensures process specifications portray the appropriate information and design intent,
- Reviews and evaluates equipment bids,
- Compiles operating cost estimates including estimation of consumables, labor, maintenance materials and power,
- Compiles or provides input to capital and sustaining capital cost estimates,
- Prepares written project reports.
Education & Experience
B.S. Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or Metallurgy, preferably with Master’s degree
Skills
1. Hands-on experience in developing, designing, and documenting production processes and equipment preferably in a hydrometallurgical, extractive chemistry or mining engineering setup.
2. Strong technical insights and problem solving, critical and creative thinking skills
3. Capable of developing and implementing technical and R&D plans.
4. Strong project management and organization skills; strong capability to multi-task on projects and responsibilities.
5. Capable of organizing, leading, and carrying out effective personnel interactions at all levels.
6. Hands-on experience in developing and documenting materials production processes and equipment and in a chemistry lab environment.
7. Ability to work with employees in a multi-cultural, global team environment.
8. Comprehensive knowledge of process plant operations, process simulation tools.
9. Extensive knowledge of process design methods, process modelling.
10 Detail-oriented and has the ability to meet project deadlines.
11. Experience in working with base metals.
12. Perform engineering in all project phases of process design.
Working Conditions
Working conditions are normal for a chemical manufacturing environment. Work may involve lifting of materials and product up to 15 kg. Working in this environment requires the use of safety equipment and personal protective equipment to include but not limited to, safety glasses, hearing protectors, safety shoes/boots, and hardhats. Loose fitting clothes and jewelry are not permitted to be worn, long hair must be secured.
