Job Description

In addition to performing the duties of the Radiation and Contamination Monitor, and Decontamination Operator, the Senior Radiation and Contamination Monitor assists and advises management on radiation and contamination issues with respect to facilities, cells, pools, ventilation systems and equipment as well as coordinates and schedules the work required to ensure facilities, equipment and packages are available for processing.

This position is deemed a Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW). A Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW) is defined by the Nuclear Safety and Control Act as a person who is required, in the course of the person’s business, or occupation in connection with a nuclear substance or nuclear facility to perform duties in such circumstances that there is a reasonable probability that the person may receive a dose of radiation that is greater than the prescribed limit for the general public (1 mSv per year for the whole body).

Key Responsibilities

  • Assists in coordinating and facilitating all Industrial Operations facility maintenance and upgrades.
  • Senior Radiation and Contamination Monitor will provide guidance and training to all M&DS personnel.
  • Schedules and allocates M&DS resources and related activities.
  • Monitors conditions within the facility to ensure safe operation of equipment and to identify maintenance or upgrade requirements.

Qualifications

  • Normally technical post-secondary graduate (3 years) or related experience in appropriate trade, or high school graduate with least three years’ experience as a Radiation and Contamination Monitor.
  • Skills and Competencies
  • Must demonstrate effective leadership and communication skills in a team environment and be able to work independently and take charge of unusual situations.
  • Must be fully knowledgeable in the design, function, and operation of Industrial Operations Facility support systems and process equipment (e.g. nuclear ventilation system, deionizers, low-level waste systems and cells).
  • Fully knowledgeable with decontamination procedures, disposal procedures, radiation hazards, transportation of dangerous good and safety control procedures.
  • Must be familiar with operating contamination/radiation detection instruments; understand that different instruments are used for specific isotopes and which instruments are used for these isotopes
  • Experience in performing calculations with respect to radiation, contamination monitoring equipment and personnel dose.
  • Must have strong documentation skills and demonstrated ability maintaining accurate records.
  • Some experience ordering material and performing inventory verification using Oracle and possess general computer skills.
  • Capable of operating heavy moving equipment.

Additional Requirements

  • Availability to work the required shift(s) and overtime
  • Travel may be required
  • Lift and carry up to 10kgs on a frequent basis
  • Good manual dexterity and grip strength
  • Operate a forklift
  • Push/pull carts with a force of up to 25kgs on an occasional basis
  • Wear a respirator for potentially several hours at a time
  • This position requires the successful completion of a vision screening and hearing test as a pre-employment condition
  • Training Required: Must complete all required training and certification as a Nuclear Energy Worker
