What to Expect

Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Senior Process Joining Engineer for our Body-in-White Shop. The engineer is responsible for developing, sustaining, and optimizing joining equipment and production processes. The engineer needs to understand how the team’s joining processes impact the overall business unit as well as other internal teams at Tesla to ensure the entire team is aligned with Tesla’s mission.

The engineer will champion the data analysis of joining and related production processes and provide the most efficient and effective reporting and insights to the leadership team using a robust methodology to measure Key Performance Indicators. Using this data the Engineer will also create a roadmap to improve the monitored metrics and address any deficiencies.

The engineer is responsible for process planning, capacity planning, project planning, PFMEA, and 2D layout updating. The engineer will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop and optimize processes. Additionally, the engineer will be responsible for driving OEE improvements, equipment production readiness and ensure best-in-class joining quality.

To be successful in this role, you will need to be experienced in process development, process sustaining, and data analytics. You will also need to have experience working with joining technologies including spot welding, laser welding, self-pierce riveting, and glue dispensing. Additionally, you must be effective in working on a project basis and be a strong communicator.

What You’ll Do

  • Must possess process engineering skills (process development/improvement, troubleshooting, standardized processes, in-depth data analysis, etc.)
  • Optimize product flow and line efficiency by designing or improving tools, jigs, stations, work methods and ergonomics using the 5S methodology
  • Create and maintain standardized processes, layouts and work instructions
  • Drive OEE top offender resolution, implementing actions to achieve quarterly goals, specifically in the areas of quality and equipment availability
  • Utilize knowledge of electrical and mechanical assemblies to predict equipment failure modes, proactively set preventative maintenance schedules, and improve preventative maintenance procedures
  • Troubleshooting and analysis of joining applications
  • Develop production line improvements and coordinate work between multiple teams to deliver a final product

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical/Industrial/Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 5 years of experience in the automotive industry, Body in White experience is preferred
  • Knowledge of joining technologies: resistance spot welding, laser welding, riveting, fastening, and glue dispensing
  • Knowledge of six sigma, PFMEA, control plans and problem-solving methodologies
  • Knowledge of CATIA V5/V6, AutoCAD, GD&T, NAAMS standards. Basic Mechanical Design and 3D printing experience is a plus
  • Knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics and electrical control systems
