Job Description

Leidos is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support 2nd Shift operations within our Mechanical Manufacturing Facility (MMF) in Huntsville, AL.

This role is responsible for supporting mechanical hardware execution in production, ensuring alignment between design intent, manufacturing definition, and shop floor performance to maintain production flow and delivery commitments.

This is not a traditional manufacturing engineering role. The position is intended for a mechanical engineer with strong hardware experience who can operate directly in a production environment, resolve real-time issues, and bridge gaps between engineering design and shop floor execution.

This role serves as a key technical resource on 2nd shift, working across Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, CNC Programming, and Production teams to diagnose and resolve issues impacting machining, fabrication, and assembly operations.

This position supports 2nd Shift operations (Monday–Thursday, 4x10 schedule) with flexibility to support Friday operations as business needs require.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Serve as a primary mechanical engineering resource on shift, supporting production and maintaining hardware execution.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical hardware issues, including fit, tolerance stack-up, assembly challenges, and manufacturability concerns.

  • Interpret engineering drawings, models, and GD&T to support production and resolve discrepancies.

  • Ensure alignment between design intent and shop floor execution, identifying and closing gaps that impact build and flow.

  • Work directly with Production, Quality, CNC Programming, and Manufacturing Engineering to resolve issues and maintain throughput.

  • Support nonconformance resolution and root cause corrective action (RCCA) activities.

  • Evaluate and improve manufacturing definition (MBOMs, routers, work instructions) to ensure accuracy and executability.

  • Provide real-time technical decision-making to minimize disruption and maintain schedule adherence.

  • Maintain discipline in configuration control and documentation integrity across engineering and production systems.

  • Escalate complex design or process issues to day shift engineering leadership as required.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline.

  • 8–12+ years of experience supporting mechanical hardware in design and/or production environments.

  • Demonstrated experience resolving hardware-related issues in production, including fit, tolerance, interface, or assembly challenges.

  • Strong understanding of GD&T, tolerance analysis, and mechanical interfaces.

  • Experience interpreting engineering drawings and CAD models to support build and troubleshooting.

  • Experience working directly in a production environment, supporting machining, fabrication, or assembly operations.

  • Proven ability to operate independently and make technical decisions in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills working with engineering, quality, and production teams.

  • U.S. Citizen with ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in aerospace or defense manufacturing environments.

  • Experience transitioning mechanical designs into production, including resolving design for manufacturability (DFM) issues.

  • Experience diagnosing and resolving nonconformances and hardware performance issues.

  • Experience supporting precision machining operations (multi-axis CNC, tight tolerance components).

  • Familiarity with Solumina MES, Costpoint ERP, and Windchill PLM.

  • Experience with Siemens NX or similar CAD/CAM tools.

  • Experience in production ramp, recovery, or rate transition environments.

  • Working knowledge of Lean, Six Sigma, or structured problem-solving methodologies.
