Job Description

Your Opportunity

At Schwab, you’re empowered to make an impact on your career. Here, innovative thought meets creative problem solving, helping us “challenge the status quo” and transform the finance industry together. We believe in the importance of in-office collaboration and fully intend for the selected candidate for this role to work on site in the specified location(s).

Schwab is looking for a Senior Manager, Software Development & Engineering (PL) to lead multiple Agile and Lean engineering teams supporting large-scale, business-critical technology platforms. In this role, you will translate business priorities into clear engineering objectives, guide delivery execution, improve platform reliability, and strengthen operational excellence across teams.

You will partner closely with product, architecture, SRE, QA, program management, finance, talent acquisition, business stakeholders, and adjacent engineering groups to deliver cohesive outcomes. This role is ideal for a people leader and technical leader who can operate across strategy and execution, build trusted partnerships, develop engineering talent, and lead teams through platform modernization and responsible GenAI adoption.

Your leadership will help teams improve quality, reduce operational toil, modernize legacy platforms, and deliver reliable technology outcomes that support Schwab’s clients, business partners, and long-term technology strategy.

What you have

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated Engineering Management experience leading multiple software engineering teams responsible for platform delivery, modernization, operational support, and production ownership
  • Ability to provide Technical Leadership by guiding technical direction, influencing architecture decisions, improving engineering standards, and helping teams navigate complex tradeoffs
  • Strong Systems Engineering capability, including understanding scalable, resilient, secure, and maintainable platforms across applications, services, dependencies, and data flows
  • Experience leading disciplined Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) practices across planning, delivery, testing, validation, documentation, deployment, and operational readiness
  • Ability to use Generative AI or AI-assisted engineering practices responsibly to improve planning, delivery, quality, documentation, automation, modernization, and operational efficiency
  • Strong Stakeholder Management skills, including the ability to align product, architecture, SRE, QA, program management, finance, business partners, and engineering teams around shared outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to develop managers, technical leads, and engineers through coaching, mentorship, feedback, career development, and talent planning
  • Strong technical judgment, business acumen, communication skills, and ability to make data-informed decisions in complex or ambiguous environments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with large-scale software systems using modern engineering technologies such as Java, .NET, cloud platforms, containers, microservices, relational databases, NoSQL, and messaging platforms
  • Experience leading teams in a large, complex organization, including onshore and offshore delivery models
  • Experience improving operational health through KPIs, SLAs, production readiness, monitoring, documentation, and continuous improvement
  • Experience leading platform modernization, including legacy system analysis, modernization assessment, migration planning, validation, deployment, and adoption of modern engineering practices
  • Familiarity with tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or similar AI-assisted engineering tools
  • Experience building mechanisms that scale adoption and knowledge sharing, such as champion forums, reusable practices, playbooks, or team learning communities

Learning Opportunities

In this role, you will continue strengthening your leadership across enterprise-scale platform delivery, modernization strategy, operational excellence, and responsible GenAI adoption. You will have the opportunity to deepen your experience leading multiple engineering teams, improving platform health, and shaping engineering practices that influence how technology teams deliver at scale.

You will also expand your ability to apply GenAI across the full SDLC, including planning, quality, documentation, automation, operational toil reduction, and modernization. Through cross-functional partnerships, you will gain broader exposure to business-critical technology platforms, enterprise architecture direction, SRE practices, QA strategy, and business stakeholder alignment.

Skill Development Values

At Schwab, skills are developed through meaningful work, mentorship, training, collaboration, and continuous learning. This role offers the opportunity to grow as a leader who develops others, builds trust across teams, and helps engineers apply technology in ways that create measurable business impact.

"In addition to the salary range, this role is also eligible for bonus or incentive opportunities."
