About the role and team

Leading at Uber means setting direction in motion, not waiting for perfect conditions. As a Senior Engineering Manager (L6), whether you are leading a "team of teams" focused on hyper-personalizing the Uber Eats feed through cutting-edge ML, or overseeing the distributed compute platforms and payment systems that support millions of global earners, you are building for real-world impact at massive scale.

This role requires a leader who can navigate high-stakes ambiguity and make hard calls under pressure. You’ll be responsible for setting long-term technical vision while managing the weight of decisions that affect global reliability and business outcomes. You won't just follow a playbook; you will help write it by building high-performing teams in an environment where the pace is relentless and the stakes are high. If you lead with clarity, build with heart, and thrive in the "messy" reality of doing big things—this is where you’ll make your mark.

What you’ll do

  • Lead and grow a high-performing engineering organization of managers and staff-level ICs, fostering a culture of technical excellence, operational rigor, and continuous learning.
  • Define and execute the strategic roadmap for your domain, ensuring technical investments align with high-impact use cases and long-term business objectives.
  • Drive architectural decisions for large-scale distributed systems, challenging your teams to design robust, scalable solutions for batch compute, ML orchestration, or global payments.
  • Partner deeply across disciplines—including Product, Data Science, Design, and Finance—to identify opportunities, prioritize initiatives, and deliver seamless platform integrations.
  • Assume complete accountability for the reliability, cost-efficiency, and performance of your systems, establishing metrics that drive measurable impact.
  • Navigate a diverse set of opinions among global stakeholders, synthesizing different perspectives to drive decisions effectively and unblock execution.

Basic Qualifications

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 5 years in engineering management and 4+ years as a manager of managers.
  • Proven track record of setting direction for an organization, constructing visions that unify multiple engineering teams and align with primary customer needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive high productivity and a bias to action across direct teams while proactively unblocking dependencies across the larger organization.
  • Experience coaching managers on crafting team visions and translating high-level strategy into actionable roadmaps and successful outcomes.
  • Expertise in managing organizational performance, making the hard calls when necessary, and building a reliable bench of the next generation of leaders.
  • Ability to drive a culture of high accountability for technical decisions, encouraging calculated risks and bets to balance long-term productivity with short-term needs.
  • Education: Master’s degree or equivalent practical experience in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in a technical field with a research or applied focus on large-scale ML systems, distributed computing, or related paradigms.
  • Domain expertise in Payments, AdTech, or Autonomous Systems, with an understanding of global and regional nuances.
  • Deep understanding of product experimentation, including the statistical mechanics and analysis needed to challenge experimental results.
  • Strong storytelling and communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical ideas to C-level executives and non-technical audiences.
  • A "Driver" mindset: You are biased toward action, a master disambiguator, and stay resilient through constant change.

About Uber

We are Uber. The go-getters. The kind of people who are relentless about our mission to help people go anywhere and get anything and earn their way. Movement is what we power. It’s our lifeblood. It runs through our veins. It’s what gets us out of bed each morning. It pushes us to constantly reimagine how we can move better. For you. For all the places you want to go. For all the things you want to get. For all the ways you want to earn. Across the entire world. In real time. At the incredible speed of now.

The idea for Uber was born on a snowy night in Paris in 2008, and ever since then our DNA of reimagination and reinvention carries on. We’ve grown into a global platform powering flexible earnings and the movement of people and things in ever expanding ways. We’ve gone from connecting rides on 4 wheels to 2 wheels to 18-wheel freight deliveries. From takeout meals to daily essentials to prescription drugs to just about anything you need at any time and earning your way. From drivers with background checks to real-time verification, safety is a top priority every single day. At Uber, the pursuit of reimagination is never finished, never stops, and is always just beginning.
