The Sr Home Equity Underwriter role will be making a difference in our members’ lives through their mortgage needs. This is accomplished by providing the highest quality experience for both internal and external members. The Underwriter will be responsible for underwriting, Home Equity, Home Improvement, HELOC & Unimproved Property Loan applications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as the subject matter expert on the Home Equity Team for underwriting and processing of Home Equity, HELOC, Home Improvement, and Unimproved Property Loans.
  • Work with the training and development team to provide product training to the Retail Team.
  • Support other underwriters with complex transactions and applications that fall within the elevated approvals limits of a senior underwriter.
  • Train and onboard new home equity underwriters
  • Perform a thorough needs assessment for all lending products for members and prospective members
  • Assess credit worthiness for each applicant and weighs overall risk of the loan request as well as total member relationship.
  • Balances risk and reward paradigm while maintaining strict compliance measures and adherence to loan policy and laws.
  • Provide consultative sales advice for members, including consultative advice for members that we are unable to approve for a loan product.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive relationship by creating an exceptional experience making the member feel valued.
  • Communicate underwriting decisions with a sales and service mindset
  • Underwrites loan requests initiated through digital platforms, inbound and outbound calls and solution centers.
  • Proactively identifies changes in member’s life and banking needs and recommends relevant solutions to enhance the member’s financial and life goals.
  • Maintain and follow up regularly on a pipeline of loans.
  • Provides timely responses to member and other team member requests
  • Originate, process, and close home equity products. Closings are processed through coordination with Solution Center partners for branch in-person closings
  • Prepare closing documents and coordinate branch closing for real estate loans
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of lending compliance requirements and TX home equity laws.
  • Assist members and team members with new and existing Home Equity/HELOC loans
  • Maintain a constant tracking of loan applications received and loans funded
  • Proactively find ways to support the Home Equity Team’s goals and work collaboratively with fellow team members.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
  • Proactively reach out to members to review their draw period when initial draw period ends for sales opportunities.
  • Perform outbound and inbound discussions for members with loan renewals to retain and promote Wellby Home Equity products.
  • Maintains comprehensive knowledge and training of the Bank Secrecy Act, Customer Identification Program, USA Patriot Act, OFAC, Fair Lending, Reg Z
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • 5+ Years’ experience in Home Equity/HELOC lending.
  • NMLS Required
  • High School diploma required.
  • Associates degree, preferred in the area of general studies, business, management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent communication skills and proven effectiveness in presentation skills.
  • Current knowledge of and ability to apply financial service industry standards, laws and regulations.
  • Working knowledge of accounting and loan processing software.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely to present ideas and to report facts and technical information.
  • Ability to resolve questions and problems on responsibilities as well as manage personal workflow and meet deadlines and production goals.
  • Willingness and ability to exhibit Wellby Core Values every day.

Job Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand or sit for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
  • The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
  • The ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • The ability to observe details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
  • Must be able to occasionally lift items weighing up to 25 pounds across office and load onto shelves for various needs.
