This includes evolving freight payment and allocation capabilities into a unified Accounts Payable – Freight ecosystem while leveraging AI and agentic technologies to automate complex vendor income recovery workflows and improve financial outcomes across the enterprise.
As a Senior Engineering Manager in Finance Technology, you will lead multiple engineering teams responsible for delivering business-critical financial platforms and modernization initiatives at enterprise scale.
You will be accountable for engineering strategy, execution, operational excellence, talent development, and technology modernization across a portfolio that includes Accounts Payable – Freight platforms, freight financial operations, and AI-powered Vendor Income Recovery solutions.
You will partner closely with Product Management, Finance business stakeholders, Principal Engineers, and Architecture teams to deliver solutions that drive measurable business value while maintaining high standards of reliability, security, scalability, and engineering excellence.
This role will play a critical part in shaping the future architecture of Finance Technology by modernizing freight financial systems, expanding intelligent automation capabilities, and enabling the next generation of finance operations powered by data, AI, and cloud-native platforms.

Accounts Payable – Freight
Lead engineering teams responsible for freight-related financial platforms that support freight payment authorization, freight allocations, transportation claims, and future freight payables modernization initiatives. These capabilities are foundational to the evolution of Target’s Accounts Payable architecture and future finance modernization strategy.
Intelligent Vendor Income Recovery
Lead engineering teams building AI-powered recovery solutions that identify vendor claim opportunities through analysis of enterprise communications, contracts, and supporting evidence. Leveraging GenAI, agentic workflows, and intelligent automation, these platforms help expand recovery coverage, improve operational efficiency, and reduce dependence on third-party recovery services.
What You'll Do
Engineering Leadership & Delivery
Lead engineering teams responsible for Accounts Payable – Freight and Vendor Income Recovery platforms
Drive delivery of strategic modernization initiatives that consolidate and simplify financial operations across multiple legacy systems
Partner with business and product leaders to establish long-term technology roadmaps supporting freight financial operations and recovery management capabilities
Ensure engineering investments align to broader Finance Modernization and Finance-of-the-Future objectives
Finance Modernization & Intelligent Automation
Lead modernization of freight financial systems and associated operational workflows as part of the broader Finance modernization strategy
Drive evolution of freight payment, allocation, claims, and settlement capabilities into scalable, cloud-native finance platforms
Partner with Principal Engineers to define target-state architecture for freight payables and financial operations
Champion adoption of AI, GenAI, and agentic workflows to automate complex finance processes, exception handling, evidence gathering, and claim generation
Architecture & Platform Engineering
Partner with Principal Engineers and Architects to design cloud-native, event-driven, and microservices-based platforms
Drive adoption of modern engineering practices, platform capabilities, and architectural standards
Ensure systems are scalable, resilient, observable, secure, and operationally efficient
Lead modernization efforts involving legacy platforms, integration patterns, and technical debt reduction
Drive engineering investments that improve platform reliability, maintainability, and developer productivity
Operational Excellence
Own availability, resiliency, security, compliance, and operational health of platforms within the portfolio
Establish engineering metrics and operational mechanisms to continuously improve quality and performance
Drive production readiness, incident management, root-cause analysis, and long-term remediation efforts
Ensure compliance with enterprise security, privacy, audit, and financial controls requirements
Foster a culture of operational ownership and continuous improvement
Talent & Organization Leadership
Build, develop, and retain high-performing engineering teams
Coach and mentor engineering managers, technical leads, and senior engineers
Create growth opportunities and succession plans for key engineering talent
Foster an inclusive, collaborative, and high-accountability culture
Lead hiring efforts to build diverse and highly capable teams
Develop future engineering leaders and strengthen organizational capability
Strategic Partnership
Partner closely with Product Managers, Finance stakeholders, Architecture, UX, Data Science, and Engineering leaders
Translate business strategy into actionable engineering roadmaps and execution plans
Communicate technical and business progress effectively to senior leadership and stakeholders
Influence prioritization decisions through data, technology expertise, and business understanding
Build strong partnerships across Finance, Supply Chain, Merchandising, and Enterprise Technology organizations
About You
Leadership & Execution
Proven ability to lead multiple engineering teams and deliver complex enterprise initiatives
Strong organizational leadership skills with experience managing engineering managers, technical leads, and senior engineers
Demonstrated success driving outcomes through ambiguity and organizational complexity
Ability to balance strategic thinking with operational execution while maintaining focus on business outcomes
Technical Expertise
Strong understanding of modern software engineering practices, distributed systems, cloud-native architectures, APIs, event-driven systems, and enterprise integration patterns
Experience delivering enterprise-scale platforms with high reliability, availability, and performance requirements
Ability to effectively partner with Principal Engineers and Architects on technical strategy and solution design
Working knowledge of AI-enabled engineering practices, intelligent automation, and modern software delivery approaches
Experience with cloud platforms, microservices architectures, Kafka, enterprise APIs, and modern data platforms
Finance & Business Acumen
Experience building enterprise financial systems supporting Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Vendor Income, Reconciliation, Claims Management, Settlement, Transportation Finance, ERP ecosystems, or related operational finance capabilities
Strong understanding of financial controls, auditability, compliance, and operational risk management
Experience leading modernization initiatives involving financial operations platforms, payment systems, claims processing, or workflow automation is preferred
Familiarity with AI-enabled operational workflows, intelligent document processing, agentic systems, or financial automation platforms is a strong plus
Communication & Influence
Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills
Ability to influence across technical and non-technical audiences
Comfortable engaging with senior leaders, business partners, and executive stakeholders
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to simplify complex technical concepts
Preferred Qualifications
10+ years of software engineering experience with progressive leadership responsibilities
3+ years leading multiple engineering teams or managing engineering managers
Experience leading enterprise modernization initiatives involving legacy transformation and cloud adoption
Experience working within Finance, Accounting, ERP, Retail, Payments, Claims, Settlement, Transportation Finance, or Enterprise Operations domains
Experience delivering AI-enabled solutions or driving AI adoption across engineering organizations
Experience building and scaling globally distributed engineering teams
Track record of driving innovation, organizational transformation, and engineering excellence
