This role will support the Retirement Solutions Operational Data Store and related insight capabilities as a hands-on software engineer with a focus on data. This position will focus on building, enhancing and maintaining modern data engineering solutions that enable trusted, scalable and business-ready data for analytics, reporting and decision support.
The current Retirement Solutions technology direction centers on a Snowflake-based data platform. In this role, the associate will help engineer and support data pipelines, curated data assets and governed consumption patterns using modern Snowflake capabilities and related change data capture tooling.
Nationwide’s Governmental and Institutional Retirement Solutions business is part of the broader Retirement Solutions organization and serves retirement plan markets through dedicated Government and Institutional channels. The business supports both plan participants and plan sponsors through specialized access and service experiences and offers retirement plan solutions that include governmental plan capabilities such as 457 plans, along with tools, forms and consultative support designed to help clients strengthen retirement readiness, improve participant engagement and deliver strong service outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Design, build and support data engineering solutions for the Retirement Solutions Operational Data Store and related insight capabilities.
Develop and maintain scalable data pipelines and ETL processes to modernize data movement and transformation.
Use Snowflake, Snowpark and SQL-based transformation techniques to curate high-quality, business-ready data assets.
Support orchestration and automation using Snowflake Tasks, Snowpipe and related platform capabilities.
Create and maintain data models and semantic views that improve business consumption and usability.
Enable governed data access patterns that support analytics, reporting and AI-enabled insight use cases.
Apply data quality, security and control practices to ensure trusted and compliant data solutions.
Partner with business and technology stakeholders to translate data and insight needs into resilient engineering solutions.

It is our intention to fill this role in Columbus, Ohio on a hybrid basis. The team come in for collaboration on Mondays and Tuesdays. However, on occasion, applications from internal candidates working remotely who bring critical industry skills and relevant experience may be considered.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will focus primarily on providing high quality, efficient technology solutions to business partners by crafting new software applications or modifying and/or supporting existing packaged or custom-built applications. In this capacity, you’ll analyze, code, configure, test, debug, document and maintain applications.
Key Responsibilities:
Analyzes, solutions, develops, tests, debugs, documents and deploys software according to standards and best practices.
Applies secure software and systems engineering practices throughout the delivery lifecycle to ensure our data and technology solutions are protected from threats and vulnerabilities.
Uses DevSecOps practices, tooling and techniques.
Drives continuous improvement and learning through ongoing training, practice and innovation.
Manages project priorities, deadlines and deliverables proactively.
May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Reporting Relationships: Reports to a Technology Manager/Director.
Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education: Undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems, or other related degree. Technology experience or non-traditional technology certificates can be substituted for an undergraduate degree.
Experience: Two or more years of analysis and technology experience.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Proficiency in one or more programming language such as Java, C++, Python, JavaScript. Knowledge of software development lifecycle. Proven ability to tackle moderately sophisticated business and development problems. Ability to thrive in a team environment. Insurance/financial services industry knowledge a plus.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and Human Resources Business Partner.
