As a Senior Engineer, you serve as a specialist in the engineering team that supports the product. You help develop and gain insight in the application architecture. You can distill an abstract architecture into concrete design and influence the implementation. You show expertise in applying the appropriate software engineering patterns to build robust and scalable systems. You are an expert in programming and apply your skills in developing the product. You have the skills to design and implement the architecture on your own, but choose to influence your fellow engineers by proposing software designs, providing feedback on software designs and/or implementation. You show good problem solving skills and can help the team in triaging operational issues. You leverage your expertise in eliminating repeat occurrences.

About this Team:

Digital Checkout (DCO) owns the services behind Add to Cart, View Cart, and Checkout for Target.com and the Target app. We grow, deepen, and simplify those capabilities, and we keep them secure, reliable, and ready for scale.

Our services sit between Web, iOS, and Android and the enterprise systems that power pricing, promotions, fulfillment, loyalty, and order capture, so the same purchase path works across digital and store experiences.

You’ll work on systems guests use every time they buy, from high-demand launches and fulfillment choices to Circle and loyalty benefits and the ongoing re-platform of checkout. You’ll partner closely with product, guest experience, and enterprise domain teams, and the decisions you make show up directly in how simple and dependable the purchase experience is for guests.

Use your skills, experience, and talents to shape how guests add to cart and check out. As a Sr. Engineer, you’ll take the lead as you design and implement production-quality services, evaluate new technologies for fit, maintainability, and cost, and turn proof-of-concept work into systems the team can run. You’ll lead code and design reviews, testing, and debugging, and take part in building, automating, and releasing changes that meet architectural and operational standards. You’ll coach other engineers through complex technical issues, keep the services you own healthy in production, and contribute to disaster recovery so problems are found and fixed quickly.

Core responsibilities are described within this job description. Job duties may change at any time due to business needs.

About you:

  • 4-year degree or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of software development experience.
  • Strong domain knowledge of Target’s technology capabilities.
  • Working knowledge of service configuration and deployment.
  • Designs new testing methods and resolves technical issues with minimal assistance.
  • Strong proficiency in Kotlin/Java, including building services with Micronaut/Spring Boot.
  • Clearly communicates Agile concepts to partners within the product team.
  • A solid understanding of how their own work affects the team and guests.
  • Writes and organizes code across services and frameworks, including distributed systems where throughput and latency matter.
  • Delivers high-performance, scalable, repeatable, and secure services with broad impact.
  • Maintains technical knowledge within their areas of expertise.
  • Stays current with new and evolving technologies through formal training and self-directed learning.
