Role Summary

The Senior Director, SAP Functional leads BJ's SAP functional organization, setting the strategy, operating model, and measurable outcomes for ERP capabilities across Finance, Accounting, Merchandising, and Operations. Through functional leaders and their teams, this role is accountable for the full lifecycle of SAP and ERP periphery solutions, from business requirements and design through configuration, testing, implementation, and ongoing support.

The Senior Director translates enterprise strategy into a multiyear SAP functional roadmap, aligns investment and capacity to business priorities, and guides readiness for a future migration from ECC to S/4HANA. The role develops leaders who deliver reliable operations, effective business solutions, and sustained improvements in business and member outcomes.

In close partnership with the leader, SAP Technical, this role shares accountability for SAP outcomes and establishes a unified approach to priorities, design decisions, delivery, and stakeholder communication.

Key Responsibilities:

Functional Strategy and SAP Roadmap

  • Set the functional strategy and multiyear roadmap for SAP and ERP periphery systems, translating enterprise goals into function-level priorities, investment recommendations, and measurable business outcomes.
  • Lead functional planning for ECC to S/4HANA readiness, including capability and process assessments, business case development, migration sequencing, and organizational readiness. Align recommendations with technical leadership and executive sponsors.

Business Partnership and Portfolio Leadership

  • Serve as the senior ERP functional partner to Finance, Accounting, Merchandising, and Operations leaders. Establish shared priorities and resolve trade-offs across business value, risk, capacity, and cost.
  • Direct functional leaders in requirements, solution design, and configuration. Build member impact into portfolio decisions, including how ERP processes affect availability, accuracy, and service, and hold leaders accountable for reducing recurring friction.

Delivery Governance and Business Outcomes

  • Own functional portfolio performance across scope, budget, timeline, quality, and benefits realization. Set delivery governance and decision rights, and hold direct reports accountable for execution.
  • Establish standards for functional design, configuration, testing, and business acceptance. Review dependencies and risks across programs, intervene early, and communicate performance gaps and recovery actions transparently.

Operations and Continuous Improvement

  • Set the functional support model, service expectations, and escalation processes for stable SAP operations. Hold functional leaders and partners accountable for service performance, root-cause resolution, and user experience.
  • Allocate capacity across operational support, project delivery, and modernization. Use service and portfolio measures to address recurring issues, improve efficiency, and adjust resources as business needs change.

Vendor and Commercial Governance

  • Own governance of functional managed service providers and the portfolio of related vendors and commercial contracts, including service commitments and cost accountability. Own SAP licensing, with SAP Technical supporting its management and execution in the landscape.
  • Hold partners accountable for quality, throughput, and value. Require knowledge transfer and internal capability development so BJ's retains institutional knowledge and decision-making authority.

Functional and Technical Alignment

  • Partner with the leader, SAP Technical, to align roadmaps, functional and technical design, integration dependencies, release readiness, and support priorities. Establish shared decisions and escalation paths.
  • Resolve cross-team conflicts and resource trade-offs with peer leaders. Align functional leaders and partners around shared outcomes and consistent communication to stakeholders and executives.

Organization and Leadership Development

  • Lead the SAP functional organization through direct reports who lead teams or major functional workstreams. Define ownership, structure, and staffing to support current operations and future capabilities.
  • Coach direct reports as leaders, set clear performance expectations, and build succession and talent plans. Strengthen business acumen and functional depth, and create development opportunities that prepare talent for broader responsibility.
  • Build learning and feedback into the function's operating rhythm. Encourage experimentation, review lessons from delivery and support, and scale proven improvements across teams.

Architecture, Design, and Controls Stewardship

  • Set functional design principles with technical and architecture partners to protect maintainability, upgradability, and integration integrity. Govern exceptions and limit unnecessary customization and technical debt.
  • Own business process controls for SAP-supported processes, including SOX financial controls, process-level segregation of duties decisions, and audit readiness, in partnership with SAP Technical, Internal Audit, and business control owners. Address findings promptly and embed controls into process design and operations.
  • Hold functional leaders accountable for consistent processes and sustainable solutions that support future SAP adoption. Balance immediate business needs with the long-term ERP direction.

Qualifications:

Required Experience and Expertise

  • 10+ years of SAP functional experience, including at least 5 years in leadership roles managing teams and complex cross-functional programs, with demonstrated success leading through other leaders.
  • Deep expertise in SAP FI/CO and at least one of Merchandising, Supply Chain, or Retail Operations, including relevant capabilities such as CAR, PMR, POSDM, or Master Data.
  • Experience setting functional strategy and roadmaps, allocating resources across a portfolio, and delivering programs on time and within budget with measurable business impact.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate business priorities into SAP functional design and establish standards across delivery and ongoing support.
  • Experience governing managed service providers, commercial contracts, and costs while developing internal capability and retaining decision authority.
  • Strong retail business acumen, including retail P&L, finance operations, merchandising workflows, and SOX financial controls. Ability to explain SAP complexity, investment choices, and risks to senior business leaders.
  • Relevant degree or equivalent work experience in a related field.

Preferred Experience

  • S/4HANA implementation or ECC conversion experience, including leadership of migration business cases, readiness planning, or roadmaps.
  • Retail experience in a warehouse club, grocery, or high-volume, multi-site environment.
  • Familiarity with SAP Fiori, Solution Manager, PI/PO, and Portal in a retail context.
