About the Role

NRG is seeking a Senior Director to join its Growth & Partnerships organization. This role is ideal for an entrepreneurial, commercially minded energy leader who enjoys building new businesses and partnerships at the intersection of customer needs, power markets, technology, capital, and enterprise strategy.

The successful candidate will combine strategic insight, commercial judgment, financial acumen, and a builder’s mindset. They will set direction for a portfolio of priority opportunities, make clear recommendations on where the organization should focus, and lead teams in testing critical assumptions. They will be accountable for advancing the most promising opportunities from growth thesis through initial market deployment and transition to scale.

This position will help shape enterprise growth opportunities across NRG’s portfolio, including data center power solutions, load management, distributed energy resources, virtual power plants, utility partnerships, generation development, edge computing, capital partnerships, and other emerging opportunities. The Senior Director will work shoulder-to-shoulder with NRG’s operating businesses and functional teams, pairing enterprise perspective with deep business-unit expertise to test, validate, and de-risk opportunities before transitioning proven models to business units for scale.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of a focused pipeline of enterprise growth opportunities grounded in customer or system needs, market timing, strategic fit, partner interest, and NRG’s differentiated capabilities.
  • Direct the creation and testing of growth theses by integrating customer insight, market intelligence, competitive activity, technology trends, regulatory developments, and internal expertise.
  • Own the development of business cases, financial and operating models, commercialization strategies, partnership structures, and investment recommendations for priority opportunities.
  • Establish the critical assumptions, value drivers, risks, dependencies, milestones, hurdle rates, and decision points required to advance opportunities with discipline.
  • Lead cross-functional teams spanning commercial, finance, regulatory, legal, operations, technology, development, strategy, and business-unit organizations.
  • Build trusted relationships with business-unit leaders and functional partners to identify shared priorities, mobilize expertise, and create clear pathways from enterprise incubation to scaled execution.
  • Own senior external relationships with customers, utilities, technology providers, infrastructure investors, strategic capital providers, and other partners; establish the engagement strategy and guide supporting diligence, analysis, and commercial development.
  • Structure initial deployments, pilots, and partnerships that test commercial models, regulatory feasibility, customer commitment, partner terms, and operating fit.
  • Define measures of success and learning agendas, monitor results, and recommend whether to accelerate, reshape, partner, invest, or stop.
  • Lead a small team of direct reports and mobilize cross-functional teams across the enterprise; set clear priorities and quality standards, align contributors around shared outcomes, and create an environment that rewards analytical rigor, constructive challenge, collaboration, ownership, and pace.

What We Are Looking For

  • Enterprise-minded leaders who can connect capabilities across businesses and translate them into differentiated growth platforms.
  • Experienced builders who can move fluidly between strategy, commercial structuring, relationship development, financial analysis, and hands-on execution.
  • Deeply knowledgeable energy professionals who understand the commercial, regulatory, operational, technical, and financial forces reshaping the North American energy industry.
  • Strong strategic and analytical thinkers who can develop original insights, pressure-test assumptions, and distinguish compelling ideas from scalable businesses.
  • Creative problem solvers who challenge conventional thinking constructively, look around corners, and identify pragmatic paths through ambiguity.
  • Commercially minded leaders who understand how customer value, competitive differentiation, execution feasibility, capital requirements, and financial returns fit together.
  • Natural bridge-builders who establish trust, align diverse stakeholders, and lead effectively through influence rather than formal authority alone.
  • Executive communicators who can frame decisions and present integrated recommendations to senior leadership, clearly articulating strategic fit, customer value, enterprise advantage, economics, risk, required resources, and the recommended path forward.
  • People leaders who set a high bar for analytical rigor, ownership, collaboration, intellectual honesty, and pace.

Preferred Experience

  • 15+ years of experience originating, structuring, and advancing new businesses, commercial models, strategic partnerships, or investment opportunities, with a demonstrated record of taking ideas from “zero to one” and playing a meaningful role in driving market or organizational change.
  • Demonstrated success landing high-value partnerships, negotiating complex commercial arrangements, and advancing growth initiatives from concept through initial deployment.
  • Significant leadership experience in energy, utilities, competitive power markets, customer energy solutions, distributed energy resources, energy technology, infrastructure, data centers, industrial energy management, or a closely related sector.
  • Experience developing and defending complex business cases, financial models, commercial structures, and capital recommendations with senior executives and investment decision-makers.
  • Track record of leading multidisciplinary teams through ambiguous, high-stakes initiatives with meaningful enterprise impact.
  • Experience negotiating with customers, utilities, technology providers, strategic partners, or capital providers.
  • Familiarity with several of the following areas: wholesale power and generation economics; retail energy and customer solutions; data center and hyperscaler energy needs; utility partnerships and regulation; demand response, load flexibility, DERs, and virtual power plants; corporate development; venture investing; or commercialization of new products and services.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Engineering, Energy Systems, Public Policy, or a related discipline.
  • MBA, master’s degree, or other advanced degree preferred but not required.

Success in This Role

  • Rapidly build credibility and a strong understanding of NRG’s businesses, customers, assets, capabilities, economics, and strategic priorities.
  • Create a focused pipeline of differentiated growth opportunities with clear strategic relevance and enterprise advantage.
  • Produce rigorous, executive-ready business cases and recommendations that enable timely capital and resource decisions.
  • Build alignment across business units, functions, customers, and external partners around actionable paths forward.
  • Advance priority opportunities through disciplined stage gates, initial deployment, and measurable market learning.
  • Establish clear ownership and scalable transition plans for validated opportunities.
  • Develop a high-performing team recognized for strategic insight, commercial judgment, analytical rigor, collaboration, and execution.
  • Help NRG convert load growth, affordability needs, market evolution, and enterprise capabilities into durable sources of customer and shareholder value.
