A Day in the Life:
The Senior Director, Data Engineering & Architecture leads the strategy, design, and execution of the enterprise data engineering and architecture ecosystem. This role is accountable for building scalable, secure, and well‑architected data platforms and pipelines that enable analytics, BI, AI, and digital products across the enterprise. This leader defines the target-state data architecture, governs engineering standards and patterns, and ensures platforms are designed for performance, reliability, and cost efficiency. Partnering closely with product, analytics, security, and infrastructure teams, the role aligns data engineering execution with architectural vision, business priorities, and financial discipline to maximize the value of data investments. The role reports to the VP, Data Architecture & Engineering.
The salary for this position is $215,000/yr; commensurate with experience
What You’ll Do:
Data Engineering Platforms & Delivery
• Own the design and delivery of enterprise data platforms, pipelines, and shared engineering capabilities.
• Enable high-quality, reusable, and well-documented data products that support analytics, AI, and digital use cases.
• Drive engineering best practices across SDLC, CI/CD, testing, and platform automation.
• Data Fabric model design and delivery.
Own and Lead Enterprise Data Architecture
• Establish and evolve the target-state data architecture, including platform, integration, and analytics patterns.
• Set and govern architectural standards, reference designs, and technology guardrails across data engineering teams.
• Ensure architectural decisions balance scalability, security, performance, and cost efficiency.
Influence Platform Reliability, Performance & Cost Discipline
• Partner with Data Operations & Infrastructure leader, security, and operations teams to ensure platforms are reliable, resilient, and production-ready.
• Embed financial governance into platform and architecture decisions, including capacity planning and cost optimization.
• Define and track KPIs for platform health, engineering productivity, and return on data investments.
Govern Engineering Governance & Standards
• Establish governance models for architecture reviews, technology selection, and platform lifecycle management. ARB.
• Ensure compliance with enterprise security, privacy, and data governance requirements through architecture and engineering controls.
• Support data classification, access patterns, and stewardship through platform design.
Build & Lead High-Performing Teams
• Build, mentor, and lead senior data engineering and architecture leaders.
• Define operating models, roles, and responsibilities across platform and engineering domains.
• Foster a culture of engineering excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Partner with Vendors, Business & Technology Leaders
• Collaborate with other data leaders, product, analytics, AI, and business leaders to translate needs into scalable data solutions.
• Communicate architectural strategy, tradeoffs, and progress clearly to executive stakeholders.
• Influence prioritization and investment decisions through data-driven insights and architectural perspective.
• Influence prioritization through cost, reliability, and risk insights.
What We’re Looking For: Required Qualifications
• 12+ years of experience in data engineering, data platforms, or enterprise data architecture roles.
5+ years leading data engineering and/or architecture teams in a senior leadership capacity.
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems or related field, required; Master’s Degree, preferred
• Deep expertise in modern data architectures, platforms, and integration patterns supporting analytics and AI.
• Strong experience designing and scaling cloud‑based data platforms (Databricks/GCP/Azure/Snowflake) with an emphasis on quality, security, and performance.
• Proven success establishing engineering standards, architectural governance, and reusable data capabilities at enterprise scale.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience leading enterprise-scale data engineering or platform modernization initiatives.
• Demonstrated success by establishing or advancing Data Engineering practices in large, complex environments.
• Experience partnering with product, analytics, and business leaders to deliver data-driven capabilities at scale.
