Job Description
The Senior Director, Data & Analytics leads the enterprise direction and day-to-day execution of Berkshire Hathaway Energy’s data and analytics (D&A) strategy, governance, and operating model. This role partners with business and technology leaders to establish standards and decision rights, improve data quality and trust, ensure regulatory-aligned controls (e.g., privacy, security, retention), and scale analytics products and services that drive measurable business outcomes across BHE and its operating companies.
Work Location: Onsite at one of the listed locations; remote candidates may be considered.
- Execute D&A strategic direction: Maintain the multi-year D&A strategy, roadmap, and investment priorities aligned to business objectives (reliability, safety, customer, affordability, growth) and regulatory expectations.
- Lead data governance: Establish/operate governance forums and decision rights (data owners, stewards, custodians), policies, standards, and procedures across domains (customer, asset, work, finance, market, etc.).
- Drive data quality and trust: Implement data quality management, issue intake/remediation processes, data controls, and metrics; publish data health dashboards and accountability mechanisms.
- Define the D&A operating model: Design and run the processes, roles, funding approach, and intake/prioritization for data products, analytics use cases, and platform enhancements.
- Scale analytics product delivery: Partner with data engineering, BI, and data science teams to build reusable data products (curated datasets, semantic layers, feature stores, reporting/insight products) with clear SLAs and lifecycle management.
- Enable self-service responsibly: Build governed self-service reporting/analytics capabilities including cataloging, lineage, definitions, training, and support, while reducing shadow data and inconsistent metrics.
- Ensure privacy, security, and compliance: Embed privacy-by-design and security-by-design practices; coordinate with cyber, legal, compliance, and records management to support audits and compliance obligations.
- Master data & metadata management: Lead enterprise approaches to master/reference data, business glossary, metadata, and lineage to improve interoperability and transparency.
- Performance management: Define KPIs for governance maturity, adoption, platform reliability, delivery throughput, value realization, and cost efficiency; report progress to executive stakeholders.
- Change management and adoption: Develop communication, training, and enablement plans; create playbooks and community-of-practice models for data owners/stewards and analytics users.
- Vendor/partner management: Manage relationships and contracts with tooling and consulting partners; ensure outcomes, cost discipline, and knowledge transfer.
- Team leadership: Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing team spanning governance, operations, enablement, and analytics program management; foster a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
- Stakeholder partnership: Serve as a trusted advisor to executives and operating company leaders; translate business needs into actionable D&A initiatives and ensure alignment across organizations.
- Bachelor’s degree in information systems, computer science, engineering, business, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in data & analytics, data governance, data management, analytics operations, or related fields, including leadership of cross-functional programs.
- 5+ years of people leadership experience, including hiring, performance management, coaching, and organizational design.
- Demonstrated experience establishing or modernizing enterprise data governance (policies, standards, stewardship, catalog/glossary, lineage, data quality) in a complex organization.
- Strong understanding of modern data platforms and analytics ecosystems (cloud and/or hybrid architectures, data integration, BI/semantic layers, APIs), and how governance and operating processes enable safe scale.
- Proven ability to influence senior stakeholders, facilitate decision-making forums, and drive alignment across business units and technology teams.
- Experience defining KPIs, operating rhythms, intake/prioritization, and value realization methods for D&A portfolios.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate technical topics into business outcomes.
