HIGH-LEVEL OVERVIEW
The Senior Customs Consultant provides hands-on, practically grounded customs expertise in support of legal advisory work. This role is ideal for a seasoned customs professional who thrives at the intersection of law, compliance strategy, and real-world import operations.
This is a hybrid/remote position for a law firm based in Toronto, Canada.
EXPECTATIONS
- Provide expert guidance and subject matter expertise on CBSA laws & regulations
- Collaborate with lawyers to develop legal and compliance strategies for clients
- Advise on complex import compliance issues including, tariff classification, valuation, origin, duties & taxes, and compliance risk
- Translate legal advice into practical, operational solutions to assist with client resolution plans
- Assist with customs disputes, CBSA verifications, audits, investigations, appeals and disclosures
- Support the development of defensible positions by analyzing transaction data and documentation
- Contribute operational insight to complex legal issues, helping strengthen results-focused advocacy to achieve client goals
- Communicate complex customs issues providing clear, practical compliance focused guidance
- Maintain strong client service mindset partnering with instructing lawyers and producing high quality deliverables
ESSENTIALS
- 10+ years of experience in trade compliance with brokerage and/or consulting a plus
- In depth understanding of Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) import regulations
- Hands-on experience with CBSA Assessment and Revenue Management (CARM) digital platform
- Strong analytical skills with ability to interpret and analyze trade data and documentation
- Solid organizational skills and attention to detail
- Client focused approach with high standard of service and integrity
- Customs Broker License, CCS, or CTCS a plus
- Post-secondary degree required
