Job Description

Sr. Counsel on the NIPSCO Legal-Regulatory team, with a focus on data center strategy and related regulatory filings.


Provides legal advice to clients on complex regulatory matters, with an emphasis on utility law.
Combines knowledge of one or more legal specialties with sound business acumen, and knowledge of business goals and objectives.
Supports NIPSCO and NIPSCO Generation LLC (GenCo) in execution of regulatory strategy and associated filings related to large load customers (e.g., data centers), as well as customer negotiations of related agreements.

Essential Functions

  • Resolves legal issues and provides proactive, business-savvy legal advice and counsel.
  • Manages multiple complex matters simultaneously.
  • Retains and supervises/manages outside counsel on select matters.
  • Anticipates internal/external business and regulatory issues and provides applicable legal advice.
  • Reviews and revises legal documents, such as regulatory applications, supporting testimony, legal briefs, and proposed orders.
  • Negotiates with outside parties on contractual issues and legal disputes, including energy services agreements/special contracts.
  • Assists in advising and training clients on legal issues, including preparation of clients to serve as regulatory witnesses.
  • Communicates with clients regarding status updates, including on sensitive matters.



Required Qualifications For Position

  • Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school.
  • Experience with independent case handling responsibility.

  • Licensed to practice law in at least one state in the U.S. and a member in good standing with the state bar upon hire.

Preferred Additional Qualifications for Position

  • Experience in the utility industry or other regulated industry is strongly preferred.
  • Experience at a law firm, state agency, or publicly traded corporation.
  • Experience with regulatory compliance, enterprise records management, emergency response, or business continuity.
  • Has significant experience and subject matter expertise in utility law, with an emphasis on regulatory filings and regulatory litigation before administrative agencies.
  • Strong relationships with key stakeholders in Indiana.
  • Will typically have at least 5 years of experience.

As a public utility, NiSource is required to provide continuous service to customers at all times. To ensure we fulfill that obligation, employees may be required to work outside their normal work hours and perform tasks outside of their normal responsibilities in support of emergency operations.

*The salary offered to a candidate is based on several factors including but not limited to the candidate’s skills, job-related knowledge, and relevant experience, as well as internal pay equity
