As a Sustainability Consultant in the Expertise team, you will contribute to ING’s sustainability strategy by providing thematic and sector-specific expertise on the cluster Buildings Sustainability, in all its dimensions (such as protecting and restoring nature, driving down carbon emissions, increasing resilience to climate physical risks, protecting human rights, among others) is one of the most pressing challenges facing society today. The team
Our Global Sustainability Department reports directly to the CEO and oversees the Sustainability Direction of ING Group globally. It includes strategies to improve sustainability for our customers, our community, and our colleagues.
Our team of sustainability consultants integrates sustainability within our banking operations worldwide, across both Retail and Wholesale Banking markets, and covers advice and programme management across the full range of ESG objectives. ING has been recognised as one of the most sustainable banks in the world for contributions to global challenges such as climate change and the impacts of technology on society.
We collaborate with all ING business lines, domains and countries, and actively engage with external stakeholders to create a ripple effect on sustainability impact. The Global Sustainability department consists of three teams: Expertise, Integration & Implementation, and Stakeholder Engagement. This role sits in the Expertise team, a team of 16 passionate experts on Climate, Nature and Human Rights. Each theme is led by a senior expert, supported by consultants who help shape and advance ING’s sustainability strategy.
Roles and responsibilities
As a Sustainability Consultant in the Expertise team, you will:
Provide core sustainability expertise for the Cluster Buildings (Residential Real Estate, Commercial Real Estate).
Own the implementation of methodologies to quantify, measure and determine impact (e.g. target setting and measuring progress).
Own and improve the Climate (Terra) methodology and support development of methodologies for other themes (e.g. Just Transition).
Identify dependencies and barriers to delivery and propose solutions to internal stakeholders.
Support the shaping and influencing of upcoming standards and regulation (e.g. provide input for consultations and share internal views on impacts).

5–8 years of relevant experience in sustainability, preferably within financial institutions or consultancy, to effectively contribute to ING’s sustainability strategy.
Expertise in Climate and preferably also in Nature and Social themes to support multiple sustainability priorities.
Experience or specialised knowledge in one or more Terra sectors to strengthen sector-specific impact.
Experience in developing methodologies to quantify sustainability impact (e.g. target setting on GHG emission reduction) to support measurable outcomes.
Experience with sustainability reporting frameworks (e.g. GHG Protocol, CSRD) to ensure alignment with reporting requirements.
Proven programme and leadership skills, with the ability to guide others as a senior consultant.
Strong stakeholder management skills to connect with internal stakeholders and maintain governance around methodologies and execution.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and deliver high-quality results in a flexible and adaptable way.
Willingness to develop and expand knowledge on sustainability topics relevant for financial institutions and ING sectors/regions.
Experience participating in or leading internal and external working groups and representing the organisation.
