The Senior Business Intelligence Engineer leads the design and delivery of complex, high-impact data products that shape decision-making across Crane Worldwide's global logistics operations. Operating with a high degree of independence, this role owns projects from strategy through execution. This includes identifying opportunities proactively, navigating ambiguous requirements, and managing stakeholder relationships with little oversight. The Senior BI Engineer brings deep expertise in SQL, dbt, and Power BI, architects net-new data models, and sets the standard for engineering quality on the team. Beyond individual delivery, this role actively elevates the people around them through code reviews, mentorship, and cross-functional collaboration.

Essential Job Functions

Designs, develops, and maintains enterprise BI solutions. Utilizes Business Intelligence technology to meet operational and business needs through modern reporting solutions. Uses an engineering-driven approach: automate, test, use version control, optimize performance, measure outcomes.

Working in three main modes on our Analytics team:

  • Problem-solving and solution design
  • Act as part private investigator, part anthropologist while working to map real-world activity and processes to systems and data.
  • Act as an internal consultant while working collaboratively with business partners to design the best way to make people's decisions better and their lives easier.
  • Identify opportunities to improve data models and shared services or processes across teams.
  • Participate in technical planning/strategy process.
  • Data modeling
  • Use dbt to build and extend core data models in our Snowflake data warehouse.
  • Develop the backend models for Power BI datasets, using DAX and the full range of tooling available in the Power BI service.
  • Design well-structured schemas (i.e. ERDs) and efficient, readable data flows (i.e. DAGs) to create outputs.
  • Visualization and product development
  • Make apps and dashboards in Power BI, targeting hundreds to thousands of users globally.
  • Have the freedom to explore other solutions as needed, even if they're not part of our core stack.
  • Develop high quality visuals with minimal coaching.
  • Apply advanced patterns and advise on optimization.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Other Skills & Abilities

  • SQL: Medium to deep expertise with advanced SQL knowledge and engine specifics
  • Power BI: Data storytelling expert with ability to design and build effective dashboards to solve business problems
  • Expert in dbt: Design well-structured schemas and efficient, readable data flows to create outputs
  • Experience designing and communicating KPIs, including trade-offs between measurement approaches
  • Analytical thinking: Consider costs, benefits, risks, and trade-offs when approaching data and design problems
  • Proactive: Take ownership of tasks with energy and enthusiasm, escalating blockers appropriately
  • Effective collaboration: Build working relationships with peers, stakeholders, and senior teammates; Coach junior engineers on technical concepts
  • Clear communication: Can explain data concepts and metric decisions to non-technical stakeholders
  • Focus on quality: Apply engineering discipline including testing, version control, and documentation to all deliverables

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor’s degree Relevant field such as Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Mathematics, Statistics, Business Analytics
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant experience

Physical Requirements

  • This role is remote, with a hybrid option available if local to Houston. Standard working hours apply, with occasional travel to Crane locations as needed.
  • Job requires the ability to use vision, adjust focus and work on a standard computer screen.
  • Job may require extended sitting or standing, use of standard office equipment.
  • Job will require presence at the assigned work location.
