About the Team

There are a lot of activities that happen in our stores so we have a strong cross-functional team focused on doing Anything for Pets by supporting the store teams through effective communications, processes and initiatives. The Store Strategy & Operations department leads the way to support all store activities and define business-driving strategies. The Workforce, Insights & Planning team owns labor optimization and reporting needs. The Operations & Innovation team owns merchandise execution, process improvement, compliance, store technology and innovation. And the Strategy team leads all the business-driving efforts for Salon, PetsHotel, Pet Training and In-store customer experience. These teams work diligently to ensure our associates, pets and pet parents are supported, while operating efficiently to drive the business.

This role is based at our Phoenix Home Office, with an expectation of working a minimum of four days in the office each week. In a standard work week, associates may work up to one remote “flex day” (with leader approval). Summary

The Sr. BI Developer, serving the Store Operations & Services teams, is responsible for providing data-driven insights through strong analytical and critical-thinking skills, with a focus on delivering actionable business recommendations that drive operational efficiencies across the store network. This position requires cross-functional collaboration throughout the organization, both at the Home Office and in the Field, to compile and synthesize robust datasets and produce actionable, standardized reporting. The role identifies, defines, analyzes, prioritizes, tests, and refines reporting requirements and partners with cross-functional IS and business teams (Store Operations & Services) to deliver the final product.

The role works directly with internal stakeholders, including business partners and IS teams, to translate requirements into solutions. The candidate must be able to work independently or on a cross-functional team in a fast-changing environment while participating in a variety of projects, serving as an analytical partner, and providing data-driven solutions.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Reporting & Analytics

  • Define, Measure, Analyze, Implement and Control (DMAIC) a portfolio of Store Operations reporting focused on understanding, supporting, and improving relationships with internal Home Office and Field partners and external customers.
  • Influence business leaders, with Director alignment, to accept and better understand delivery, technology, and alternative views that elevate operations.
  • Lead user acceptance testing by comprehending, driving, and validating BI reporting metrics, attributes, and objects; clearly communicate data or object errors requiring correction by IS partners; and follow through to resolution, including root-cause evaluation.
  • Translate business needs into reporting solutions through the data stack, data storage, and ETL processes; fully comprehend and roadmap final data outputs with team support.
  • Translate technical specifications for business users and business requirements for technical teams.
  • Lead dotted-line IS team builds to deliver enterprise-ready reporting solutions.
  • Engage and collaborate on the development of a vision and roadmap that continuously advances reporting solutions.
  • Understand and apply IT terminology and a team-based approach to end-to-end reporting solutions, including big data, ETL, mapping and architecture, and report development.
  • Turn standard data into visualizations and elevated user-interface applications.
  • Resolve issues quickly and accept responsibility for resolution.

Business Intelligence (BI) Development

  • Seek, communicate, and partner on technical solutions with enterprise data warehouse teams; research gaps between business requirements and current reporting or data solutions and recommend options.
  • Develop the acumen and technical capabilities to modify and improve the enterprise BI metric portfolio and perform full discovery of root system issues and complex system and table mappings.
  • Leverage and extract big data; develop knowledge of global architecture and mapping; and perform data queries that translate into big-data engineering activities, including design, coding, and testing using SQL, Python, R, or similar tools.
  • Maintain, redesign, and elevate BI reporting tools such as MicroStrategy, Tableau, and ThoughtSpot; MicroStrategy experience is preferred.
  • Steer complex reporting discovery into insightful reporting solutions and business processes; clarify results and persuade leaders and partners to act, adopt, and become comfortable with new information.

Production / Project Management

  • Support the Director and, at times, VPs or SVPs on key projects, analysis, modeling, report development, and ad hoc work that may require independent or cross-functional execution.
  • Serve as the point person for week-to-week progress, testing, and delivery by dotted-line IT partners; translate directed strategy into action in IT delivery.
  • Develop a detailed understanding of business operations and apply organizational knowledge gained through manager and partner interactions to current and future deliverables, data enhancements, and reporting.
  • Manage time, prioritize work, and multitask across multiple assignments.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • No direct supervisory responsibility.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in Business, Finance, Statistics, Economics, or a related field and three or more years of related experience in finance or analytical reporting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Retail experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong business and financial acumen, including the ability to interpret and use key financial and statistical data.
  • Ability to synthesize multiple datasets in varying formats into a coherent story and effectively communicate to multiple organizational levels.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including intermediate to advanced experience with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Access.
  • Strong working knowledge of MicroStrategy, business intelligence tools, and/or other advanced programming applications used for data definition and manipulation.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively on cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to translate between technical specifications and business requirements.
