We are seeking a Sr. Administrative Director to lead one of the largest and most complex divisions within the Department of Medicine—Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. This role sits at the center of clinical operations, research, and education across our Academic Medical Centers (AMCs), with responsibility for a highly visible, multi-entity portfolio spanning two flagship institutions.

The Division includes:

• High-acuity ICU and critical care services
• Pulmonary specialty and consult programs
• Procedural services
• A robust research enterprise (> $39M in annual direct costs, 185+ submissions)
• An accredited fellowship program
• 530+ staff, including 140+ faculty

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or advanced degree strongly preferred

  • 7+ years of progressive leadership experience, ideally in academic medicine or a complex health system

The Sr. Administrative Director is the senior administrative leader responsible for the Division’s overall performance, strategic direction, and operational excellence across BWH, MGH, their physician organizations, and affiliated sites.


Reporting jointly to Department of Medicine leadership and the Division Chief, the Sr. Administrative Director will:

• Lead financial, operational, and administrative performance
• Serve as a key partner to executive leadership
• Play a central role in integrating the Division across AMCs into a unified model

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership & Integration
• Partner with the Division Chief and executive leadership to define and execute a multi-year strategy
• Lead efforts to integrate operations, structures, and teams across BWH and MGH
• Identify and advance growth opportunities, partnerships, and new programs
• Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, including the DOM Chair and AMC executives

Operations & Clinical Management
• Oversee performance of ICU, pulmonary specialty, consult, and procedural services
• Drive access, capacity management, and care delivery optimization
• Lead initiatives focused on quality, patient experience, and cost efficiency
• Ensure compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and institutional standards

Research & Education Administration
• Provide administrative leadership for a large, complex research portfolio
• Support grant development, funding strategies, and regulatory compliance (IRB, NIH, etc.)
• Oversee operations of the fellowship and education programs, ensuring accreditation and financial stewardship

Financial Leadership
• Own full financial performance, including budgeting, forecasting, and resource allocation
• Manage complex funding streams across clinical, research, and education missions
• Develop strategies for growth, cost containment, and financial sustainability
• Partner on faculty compensation planning and financial modeling
People & Organizational Leadership
• Lead and develop a large, distributed administrative team
• Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
• Partner with HR on talent management, workforce planning, and employee relations
• Champion a high-performing, inclusive, and supportive environment
