1.) Prepare and record payroll journal entries.
2.) Reconcile payroll‑related general ledger accounts, including wages, taxes, benefits, and accruals.
3.) Review and reconcile payroll tax filings and support year‑end processes (W‑2, 1099, etc.).
4.). Perform month‑end and year‑end close activities related to payroll.
5.) Partner with HR to resolve payroll discrepancies and employee inquiries.
6.) Enter reconciliations and management reports for accuracy and completeness.
7.) Ensure compliance with accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
8.) Ensure accurate recording of wages, taxes, benefits, and payroll‑related accruals.
9.) Analyze payroll trends and variances; identify and resolve issues proactively.
10.) Monitor compliance with wage and hour laws, tax regulations, and internal controls.
11.) Serve as point of contact on payroll accounting policies and best practices.
12.) Stay current on accounting standards and assess the impact of new regulations payroll accounting.
13.) Support audits (internal, external, and regulatory) by providing documentation and explanations.
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field.
5-7 years of payroll or payroll accounting experience; multi‑state experience preferred.
Strong understanding of payroll regulations, tax laws, and accounting principles.
Proficiency with payroll systems (e.g., UKG, ADP, Workday) and Excel.
Excellent attention to detail, analytical skills, and problem‑solving ability.
Strong communication skills and ability to work with confidential information.
Experience with large or complex payroll environments.
Knowledge of GAAP and payroll‑related accounting standards.
Experience with process automation or system implementations.
CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) or FPC certification is a plus.

Founded by James Haslam II, the first Pilot gas station was opened in Gate City, Virginia, in 1958. After more than four decades of rapid growth, expansion and partnership, Pilot and Marathon Oil Company entered an agreement to form Pilot Travel Centers in 2001.
Over the years, Pilot Travel Centers experienced significant growth and expanded internationally, opening its first travel center in Canada in 2006. In 2007, Pilot bought Marathon Petroleum’s shares and entered a new partnership with CVC Capital Partner in 2008. Two years later, Pilot Travel Centers and Flying J Inc. entered an agreement, officially creating Pilot Flying J on July 1, 2010.
