Job Description

Job Purpose

Provide advanced technical expertise and specialist support for the Hybrid SQL Database platform across on-premises, private cloud, and public cloud environments. Contribute to platform architecture, engineering standards, modernization initiatives, automation, resilience, security, and performance improvements. Support the adoption of cloud-native database technologies, DevOps, Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC), and platform engineering practices while providing technical guidance, operational support, and subject matter expertise to engineering teams and stakeholders.

Job Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the evolution and implementation of the Hybrid SQL Database platform roadmap.
  • Support the development and adoption of SQL engineering standards, patterns, reference architectures, and best practices.
  • Participate in modernization initiatives including cloud migration, automation, platform transformation, and technical debt remediation.
  • Provide specialist expertise on Azure SQL, SQL Managed Instance, Platform-as-a-Service, and related database technologies.
  • Assist with the implementation of Infrastructure-as-Code, configuration management, and automated deployment practices.
  • Contribute to database automation, self-service capabilities, API integrations, and Database-as-a-Service initiatives.
  • Research emerging technologies and provide technical recommendations to support platform and business objectives.
  • Support platform performance, scalability, availability, recoverability, and resiliency improvements.
  • Collaborate with architects, cloud engineers, cybersecurity teams, and product teams to align database solutions with enterprise standards.
  • Contribute to observability, monitoring, telemetry, and proactive health management practices.
  • Participate in technical reviews, design assurance activities, and implementation quality assessments.
  • Support disaster recovery, business continuity, compliance, and security requirements across database environments.
  • Provide expert technical support and escalation assistance for complex database and platform issues.
  • Mentor and coach engineers and database administrators within the SQL domain.
  • Contribute to DevOps, CI/CD, automation, and engineering productivity initiatives.
  • Participate in proof-of-concepts, technology evaluations, and innovation activities.
  • Conduct knowledge-sharing and technical enablement sessions.
  • Support the achievement of business strategy, objectives, and values.
  • Contribute to Nedbank culture-building initiatives.
  • Participate in corporate responsibility initiatives aligned to business objectives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, systems, and ways of working through agile thinking.

Essential Qualifications - NQF Level

  • Matric / Grade 12 / National Senior Certificate
  • Advanced Diplomas/National 1st Degrees

Essential Certifications

  • Cloud fundamentals
  • SQL and/or other database certifications
  • Cloud Database related certification (AWS and/or Azure) - Advantage

Minimum Experience Level

  • Min 5 IT Experience
  • 3 years experience in Database Administration

Technical / Professional Knowledge

  • SQL, PostgreSQL and MongoDB, MongoDB Atlas
  • Information Technology (IT) Architecture
