SPED Paraprofessional (Special Education Teacher’s Assistant)

Location: 6633 W Camelback Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85033

Start Date: 2026–2027 School Year

Compensation: $15.50 – $17.00 per hour, DOE

Position Overview

Academies of Math and Science (AMS) is a network of high-performing K–8 public charter schools committed to academic excellence, college readiness, and equitable access to high-quality education for students in historically underserved communities.

AMS is seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and dependable SPED Paraprofessional to support scholars with disabilities and assist special education teachers in creating a positive, structured, and inclusive learning environment.

The ideal candidate is patient, collaborative, and passionate about helping students with diverse learning needs reach their academic, behavioral, and social-emotional goals. This position works closely with special education teachers, classroom teachers, related service providers, and campus leadership to provide individualized support and help implement student accommodations and services.

Key Responsibilities

Special Education & Instructional Support

• Assist special education teachers with daily instructional activities and classroom lessons
• Provide individualized and small-group academic support to scholars with disabilities
• Reinforce instruction and assist students with assignments, classroom activities, and learning tasks
• Support accommodations and instructional strategies outlined in students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
• Assist scholars in accessing the general education curriculum and participating in classroom activities
• Monitor student progress and communicate observations to special education teachers
• Assist with preparing instructional materials, adapted resources, and classroom supports
• Encourage students to develop independence and self-advocacy skills

Student & Behavioral Support

• Provide academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and functional support based on individual student needs
• Help maintain a safe, positive, structured, and inclusive learning environment
• Support classroom routines, procedures, and behavioral expectations
• Implement positive behavior support strategies as directed by special education staff
• Assist with preventative intervention and de-escalation strategies when appropriate
• Support students during transitions, lunch, recess, assemblies, field trips, and other school activities as assigned
• Assist students with daily living or functional needs when required by their educational plans and campus procedures

Collaboration & Professional Growth

• Work collaboratively with special education teachers, general education teachers, related service providers, and campus leadership
• Participate in IEP-related meetings and student support discussions as appropriate
• Maintain accurate and professional documentation regarding student support and progress
• Participate in professional development and training opportunities
• Maintain confidentiality regarding student records, IEPs, and other sensitive information
• Follow campus policies, procedures, safety protocols, and student support plans

Family & Student Engagement

• Build positive, respectful, and supportive relationships with scholars
• Encourage students to develop confidence, independence, and positive learning habits
• Communicate professionally with staff regarding student needs, progress, and concerns
• Maintain professionalism and confidentiality when interacting with students and families
• Promote an inclusive classroom environment where all scholars feel supported and valued

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

• High school diploma or GED
• Previous experience working with children or in an educational setting preferred
• Ability to work effectively with students with diverse learning needs
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills
• Ability to follow individualized student support plans and teacher direction
• Ability to remain patient, professional, and supportive in challenging situations
• Commitment to supporting students in Title I and multilingual learner communities
• Ability to maintain a positive, professional, and student-centered environment

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience as a special education paraprofessional, teacher assistant, instructional aide, or classroom support staff
• Experience working with students with disabilities or diverse learning needs
• Experience implementing behavioral or academic interventions
• Familiarity with IEPs, accommodations, and special education services
• Experience working in a Title I or high-need school environment
• Experience supporting English Language Learners
• Bilingual (Spanish-English) preferred
