Job Description

Join us in pioneering breakthroughs in healthcare. For everyone. Everywhere. Sustainably.

Our inspiring and caring environment forms a global community that celebrates diversity and individuality. We encourage you to step beyond your comfort zone, offering resources and flexibility to foster your professional and personal growth, all while valuing your unique contributions.

Join our Molecular Imaging (MI) division as a Sr. Staff Scientist – SPECT Image Formation, where you will play a critical role in advancing multimodal quantitative SPECT imaging technologies that support current and future clinical needs. You will leverage your expertise in experimental nuclear physics and imaging instrumentation including modeling and simulation of detector technologies—to develop, test, and optimize solutions that balance technical innovation with clinical and business requirements.

This position offers the opportunity to shape next-generation SPECT systems, working collaboratively with world-class scientists, engineers, and clinical researchers to deliver imaging innovations that enhance diagnostic precision and patient outcomes.

You are responsible for:

  • Sustaining and enhancing image formation technology for SPECT systems to ensure optimal performance, reliability, and continuous improvement.

  • Designing and conducting nuclear image formation experiments, analyzing quantitative data, and translating findings into design improvements in collaboration with domain experts.

  • Working with both legacy and emerging technologies, deep-diving into existing architectures to maintain, adapt, and evolve solutions while contributing to future system innovations.

  • Integrating (Cadmium Zinc Telluride) CZT detector modules with front-end electronics, readout/DAQ systems, mechanical assemblies, and thermal structures to enable end-to-end system functionality.

  • Assembling, debugging, and testing prototype systems while troubleshooting complex issues across detector physics, electronics, calibration, and mechanical integration.

  • Supporting energy calibration, charge-sharing correction, and stability characterization through data analysis and close collaboration with calibration and image formation teams.

  • Applying both experimental and modeling/simulation-based methods (e.g., GEANT4) to troubleshoot, validate, and refine imaging technologies.

  • Providing technical expertise and support to internal teams (service, marketing, and product management) and partnering with luminary clinical sites worldwide to evaluate and validate new technologies in clinical environments.

  • Serving as the technical integration interface across physics, electronics, calibration, and image formation teams to maintain system-wide consistency and alignment.

  • Documenting procedures, test configurations, and lessons learned while contributing to design guidelines, standards, and best practices that support scalability and long-term sustainability.

  • Collaborating across a multidisciplinary, global team of physicists, system engineers, and clinical researchers to align innovations with clinical value and customer needs.

  • Leading and contributing to the resolution of complex, large-scale technical challenges—both independently and as part of a collaborative R&D environment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Experimental Nuclear Physics, Detector Physics and Imaging Instrumentation, or a closely related field.

  • 7+ years of experience post-graduation with a scientific publication record and presentations at professional meetings or an issued patent portfolio demonstrating the contributions to the field.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and scientific communication skills.

  • Strong experimental skills with a proven ability to troubleshoot complex, interdisciplinary system issues.

  • Strong capability in bench-level detector experimentation and system integration.

  • State-of-the-art knowledge of scintillation and semiconductor radiation detectors.

  • Problem solving experience with simulation packages such as MCNP, GEANT4, GATE, Simind or equivalent modeling tools.

  • Demonstrated understanding of medical imaging principles, particularly task-based quantitative image quality.

  • Familiarity with advanced image analysis techniques, AI-assisted image reconstruction, and quantitative imaging of biomarkers.

  • Familiarity with design, and use of instrument digital twins (iDT) and digital twins for planning, evaluation and optimization.

  • Able to work independently while providing critical technical support to senior engineers and leaders.

  • Experience with software development tools, scripting, version control, and collaborative computing environments.

  • Proficiency using MATLAB, Python, C/C++/C# on Windows and Linux/Unix platforms.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams and communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.

  • Pragmatic, detail-oriented, and execution-focused.

  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (up to 10%).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven hands-on expertise with gamma-ray detection instrumentation using scintillation and semiconductor radiation detectors (CZT strongly preferred), including system integration, lab prototyping, and debugging.

  • Working knowledge of front-end electronics, data acquisition (DAQ), calibration methods, and performance characterization.

  • Comfortable translating theory into practical, working hardware, in particular the ability to translate clinical requirements into mathematical models and iDT.

  • Understanding to design, execute and evaluate clinical test studies to assess imaging technologies and virtual clinical trials
