Under the direction of a pharmacist, the Specialty Pharmacy Technician performs prescription order entry and filling of specialty and infusion prescriptions. Manages ongoing specialty patient caseloads using organizational and follow up skills. Communicates and follows up with patients, referral sources and payers. Obtains insurance authorization as required. Prepares sterile medications using aseptic technique. Utilizes the pharmacy computer system. Maintains accurate documentation records. Performs administratively assigned duties.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs job duties under the direction of the pharmacist. Assists the Pharmacist in filling prescription items, as permitted by the State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication and follow up skills. Communicates in a courteous and professional manner utilizing proper etiquette. Communicates effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Effectively communicates with multiple professional disciplines, patients and third party payers as required. Consistently notifies patient and physician office staff of prescription status in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates the ability to analyze available facts and develop sound, effective problem-solving based on that information; ability to resolve issues in a timely, efficient and effective manner.
  • Directs all pertinent information and all medication-related questions to a pharmacist.
  • Functions well under pressure and/or high stress situations.
  • Is capable of dealing with people under stress and offering assistance possible to ease the duress while coordinating for medications for the patient.
  • Proficient in the use of computers. Accurately completes order entry, labeling and facilitates the preparation and dispensing of medications.
  • Fills medications from computer-generated labels.
  • Compounds medications following prescriptions issued by physicians or other authorized practitioners.
  • Demonstrates competence relating to pharmaceuticals in the setup and preparation of intravenous products and therapy services.
  • Labels products appropriately, including cautionary or auxiliary labels.
  • Sanitizes IV room, equipment and hood.
  • Takes inventory, places orders, checks in drugs and supplies, stocks shelves and removes out-of-date items from the inventory. Maintains adequate supply of drugs, supplies and other pharmaceutical stock.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Heavy Work

Exertional activity: Occasionally lift and/or carry 100 lbs; Frequently lift and/or carry 50 lbs; Stand and/or walk at least 6 hours in an 8-hour work day.

Nonexertional activity: Stooping (bending at the waist) and crouching (stooping and bending at the knees) – required frequently; Handling (grasping) – required frequently; Fingering (fine manipulation) – required only occasionally.

Important: The functional capacity to perform heavy work includes the functional capacity to perform medium, light and sedentary work.

EDUCATION: High School diploma

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Two years previous infusion or specialty pharmacy experience as a professional.
