Support students. Build confidence. Keep progress on track.
You’ll support students through their college journey, helping them stay engaged, attend well, build confidence and make progress.
As a Specialist Personal Tutor, you’ll deliver tutorials, provide pastoral guidance and use student information to spot barriers early. You’ll work with curriculum teams and student support colleagues to put the right support in place, helping students develop the skills, behaviours and confidence they need for their next steps.
This role will suit someone who is calm, organised and student focused. You’ll be good at building trust, holding supportive conversations and helping learners stay on track when college life feels challenging.
What you'll do
- Deliver structured tutorials that help students build confidence, develop skills and stay on track with their studies.
- Act as a key point of contact for students, offering guidance, encouragement and pastoral support throughout their college journey.
- Monitor attendance, progress and engagement, using college systems and data to spot barriers early and put support in place.
- Help students develop employability skills, career aspirations and clear next steps for further study, higher education or employment.
- Work with curriculum teams, Student Services and wider college colleagues to coordinate support for students who need extra help.
- Promote positive behaviour, wellbeing, safeguarding and inclusion, following college procedures where concerns arise.
- Keep accurate records and provide clear updates so students, managers and colleagues know what support is in place and what needs to happen next.
What you'll bring
- Experience supporting students in an education, training, youth work, pastoral or student support setting.
- Knowledge of tutorial delivery, pastoral support and the ways attendance, behaviour, wellbeing and personal development affect student achievement.
- Confidence using student information, progress data and college systems to spot concerns early and put the right support in place.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to give clear guidance, encouragement and feedback to students.
- Good organisation and attention to detail, including accurate record keeping and follow-up.
- A calm, practical approach to supporting students who may be facing barriers to learning.
- GCSE English and maths at Grade C/4 or equivalent, or willingness to achieve these within an agreed timeframe.
- Knowledge of Art and Design, or experience supporting creative learners, would be helpful but is not essential.
What you're like
-
Student-focused You care about helping learners achieve their goals, build confidence and stay on track.
-
Supportive You build positive relationships and create an environment where students feel valued and encouraged.
-
Organised You can effectively manage competing priorities while maintaining accurate records and tracking progress.
-
Collaborative You enjoy working with colleagues to deliver a consistent and high-quality student experience.
-
Proactive You identify challenges early and put support in place to help students succeed.
-
Reflective You're committed to your own professional development and continuously improving your practice.
Essentials
- You’ll need an enhanced DBS check. If you get the job, we’ll do this for you.
- You’re committed to safeguarding and inclusion.
- You can travel across our sites.
- You’re flexible and happy to work beyond standard hours when needed to support the college.
Why work with us?
At Wigan & Leigh College, small moments of support can make a big difference. A check-in after a difficult week. A conversation that helps a student stay on track. A plan that gives someone the confidence to take their next step.

You’ll work with curriculum teams and student support colleagues to help students attend, engage, progress and feel confident about their future. It’s a role where relationships matter, follow-up matters, and the right support at the right time can change the direction of a student’s college journey.
You’ll join a college that is ambitious for its students and its people. We’re focused on technical excellence, inclusion and helping our community thrive.
