Summary:
Lerch Bates is looking for a Specialist II to join our Building Science team! The Specialist II works independently under the guidance of a Consultant, primarily focused on field testing, construction quality assurance observations, and technical reporting. This role also includes limited review of submittals and design drawings.
This position is well-suited for someone who is confident working on active construction sites, adapts quickly to changing conditions, and can independently apply established methods and procedures to complete assignments.
Work includes field observations, roof and enclosure assessments, material investigations, testing, and determining causes of building performance issues. Strong judgment is required to make minor technical adaptations in the field while maintaining quality and compliance with contract requirements.

What You’ll Do:
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed in this position. They are not intended to prescribe or restrict the assignments that management may make.
Field Testing & Site Work
- Conduct field testing including:
- - Electronic leak detection testing
- - Air barrier testing
- - Water performance testing
- - Infrared thermography scanning
- Perform construction quality assurance (CQA) observations on active job sites
- Evaluate building systems and field conditions to support performance assessments
Reporting & Technical Documentation
- Write clear, accurate, and timely field reports within required deadlines
- Document site observations, test results, and findings in accordance with company standards
- Follow established report templates and quality requirements for consistency
Project Support & Coordination
- Review shop drawings and submittals on a limited basis
- Exercise judgment to determine whether work is within contracted scope and identify out-of-scope conditions
- Communicate effectively and professionally with clients, contractors, and project teams
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients and project stakeholders
Team Contribution
- Support training and development of field technicians in foundational job responsibilities
- Contribute to a collaborative team environment while working independently in the field
What You’ll Bring:
- Minimum 5 years of experience working on building construction sites or in a related industry
- Demonstrated proficiency in technical writing
- Strong practical understanding of building systems and residential/commercial construction practices
- Ability to identify field conditions and relate them to building enclosure performance issues
- Experience working on active construction sites
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- High attention to detail, organization, and commitment to quality work product
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Comfortable working independently and making sound field-level judgments
- Ability to build rapport with clients, coworkers, and subcontractors
- Strong teamwork and collaboration skills
- Proficiency in Bluebeam
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Working Environment:
This role involves both physical and mental demands and may be performed in various settings, including offices, construction sites, and confined spaces like elevator pits. Tasks often require frequent movement in multiple directions. Lerch Bates will provide reasonable accommodations upon request through Human Resources.
Physical Demands:
This role requires regular sitting, talking, and hearing in meetings and by phone. Employees must navigate tight spaces, climb ladders, move around construction sites, take measurements, and travel by car, air, or rail. Duties may involve working at heights and in confined spaces, using hands for tasks like typing and operating elevator components, and applying up to 30 lbs. of force. Close visual attention is also required.
Mental Demands:
This position requires strong written and verbal communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills. Employees must interpret complex information, apply mathematical and logical reasoning, quickly learn new skills, and manage detailed, multitask workloads under shifting deadlines. Regular interaction with executives, colleagues, clients, and external stakeholders is also expected.
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment background check and drug test. The drug test includes screening for marijuana, regardless of state or local laws permitting its use.
