The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Senior Specialist Geologist to join our Vale Base Metals Exploration team in Sudbury, Ontario.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Exploration, this role serves as a recognized geological expert responsible for leading and managing brownfield exploration programs that support resource growth and mineral discovery opportunities. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership across exploration activities including geological mapping, sampling, drill program design and execution, geological modeling, resource evaluation, and target generation.

Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, communities, research partners, and operational stakeholders, you will contribute to exploration strategy development, resource growth initiatives, business development opportunities, and continuous advancement of geological understanding across Vale Base Metals' exploration portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

Exploration Leadership & Project Management

  • Lead and manage brownfield exploration projects from planning through execution and reporting.
  • Develop and implement geological programs to identify, evaluate, and prioritize mineral exploration opportunities.
  • Support exploration activities across Vale Base Metals operations and provide technical expertise when required at other sites.
  • Collaborate with MIRA and Resource Development Planning (RDP) teams to generate and prioritize exploration targets.
  • Contribute to exploration target generation, exploration potential assessments, and resource updates for Inferred and Indicated resources.

Geological Expertise & Technical Analysis

  • Provide advanced geological expertise to exploration and project teams
  • Design and execute field programs including geological mapping, channel sampling, soil sampling, and geophysical survey follow-up activities.
  • Collect, analyze, interpret, and integrate geological, geochemical, geophysical, and drilling data.
  • Conduct geological modeling, structural interpretation, mineralogical studies, metamorphic analysis, and whole-rock geochemistry assessments.
  • Utilize industry-standard software and tools including GIS, geochemical analysis platforms, and 3D geological modeling applications.

Drill Program Management

  • Design, manage, and execute surface exploration drilling programs
  • Oversee drill targeting, collar positioning, deviation tracking, core collection, logging, cutting, scanning, and downhole geophysical programs.
  • Ensure drilling activities are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with exploration objectives and safety management plans
  • Support core processing activities, data interpretation, and reporting of exploration results.

Stakeholder Engagement & Business Development

  • Develop and maintain relationships with government agencies, Indigenous communities, industry partners, contractors, and other external stakeholders
  • Support business development initiatives through data acquisition, interpretation, property assessments, and evaluation of exploration opportunities.
  • Contribute to confidential projects, partnership opportunities, joint ventures, and strategic exploration initiatives.
  • Support academic partnerships, research programs, field tours, workshops, and industry engagement activities.

Financial Management, Safety & Continuous Improvement

  • Develop exploration budgets and support annual planning activities
  • Conduct financial reporting, forecasting, contractor performance reviews, and risk assessments
  • Assist with exploration service contracts and scope development activities.
  • Ensure environmental compliance and responsible drill site management practices.
  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in mineral exploration and applied geology.

Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing

  • Mentor and guide geologists, technical professionals, and early-career employees.
  • Promote technical excellence and knowledge sharing across the exploration organization.
  • Support professional development and capability building within exploration teams.

About You

Experience

  • Minimum 8 to 10 years of progressive experience in mineral exploration, geology, resource development, or related disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience leading brownfield exploration programs and drilling campaigns. Experience in geological modeling, resource evaluation, target generation, and mineral deposit interpretation.
  • Experience managing exploration budgets, contractors, and field programs.
  • Experience working in mining and exploration environments with multiple stakeholders and technical disciplines.

Education

Compensation

Pay Grade: F2T

Minimum Starting Salary: CAD 119,200
