About the Role

We are seeking an experienced communications professional to join the Signals, Comms & Plant (SCP) Reliability Engineering Team supporting WAIO Rail.

Reporting to the Reliability Lead, Signals, Comms & Plant (SCP), this role is responsible for improving the reliability, availability and performance of communications infrastructure and associated operational technology assets across the WAIO rail network.

The successful candidate will combine strong technical and analytical capabilities with passion for improving asset reliability, safety and performance. You will play a key role in monitoring asset performance, driving reliability improvement initiatives and influencing asset management decisions to support the long-term sustainability of communications and rail asset protection systems across WAIO's rail network.

• Execute defect elimination routines, translating asset performance insights into targeted improvement recommendations and actions to reduce recurring failures and operational risk.
• Lead or participate in Root Cause Analyses (RCA) for significant failures and business-defined trigger events, identifying root causes and implementing sustainable corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
• Monitor performance and analyse reliability trends to identify emerging risks and improvement opportunities.
• Provide governance and oversight of condition monitoring activities, asset health assessments and associated data interpretation.
• Develop, review and optimise maintenance strategies through maintenance task reviews, interval optimisation and continuous improvement initiatives to improve communications asset reliability, availability and maintainability.
• Analyse asset condition, performance and lifecycle requirements to develop asset management plans that support long-term sustainability, capital forecasting and asset renewal decisions.
• Develop scopes, business justifications and technical recommendations for reliability improvement initiatives and capital replacement projects, providing technical expertise from concept development through to execution.
• Provide technical expertise and engineering support to Operations and Maintenance teams to support safe and effective maintenance execution.
• Act as a key interface between Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Projects and OEM/vendor representatives on communications asset performance and reliability matters.

About you

Essential:

• Degree qualification in Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunications, Communications, Systems Engineering or a related technical discipline, or a Trade Qualification with significant communications experience.
• Demonstrated experience in communications systems within a rail operations, maintenance or asset management environment, with responsibility for asset performance, reliability improvement and technical decision making.
• Experience analysing asset performance, identifying opportunities and implementing initiatives to improve reliability, availability and maintainability.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and fault investigation skills, with the ability to translate data into actionable insights and recommendations.
• Proven commitment to safety leadership and risk management.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence decision making through technical recommendations.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering and Project teams.
• Ability to work autonomously, manage competing priorities and deliver outcomes in a dynamic operational environment.
• Experience using SAP Work Management or equivalent maintenance management systems.
• Minimum C or CA Class Driver's Licence.

Desirable:

• Heavy haul rail experience will be highly regarded.
• Experience in Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and defect elimination methodologies.
• Knowledge and experience with railway communications systems and associated infrastructure, including:
  • Optical Fibre communications networks
  • Microwave communications systems
  • SDH, PDH and DWDM transmission systems
  • Ethernet and IP networking technologies
  • P25 digital and analogue radio systems
  • Operational technology communications networks supporting rail operations
  • Rail asset protection and condition monitoring systems.
• Experience with operational technology (OT) networks, industrial communications systems and mission-critical railway communications infrastructure.
• Experience with rail asset protection systems, including Hot Bearing Detectors (HBD/HBWD), RailBAM, Wheel Impact Load Detectors (WILD), Wheel Condition Monitoring (WCM), weighbridges, rollingstock condition monitoring and associated operational technologies.
• Experience with condition monitoring, remote diagnostics and asset health monitoring technologies.
• Experience using Power BI, Python or similar analytical and visualisation tools to support asset performance analysis and data-driven decision making.
• Knowledge of rail safety regulatory requirements and engineering standards.
