Te kōwhiringa | The Opportunity

We are seeking a commercially astute Special Projects Manager – South to provide regional leadership across our Transport & Infrastructure business, reporting to the Capability Manager – South.

Wellington is the preferred location; however, we are open to candidates based in Hawke’s Bay, Manawatū, Christchurch or Dunedin. This role will require significant travel across the South region.

This role strengthens capability across the South Region by supporting teams to deliver maintenance and construction projects safely, efficiently and in line with The Downer Standard (TDS) and Downer Governance Management (DGM). Working closely with the Capability and Opportunities Leadership Team, you will drive improvement initiatives that lift contract performance and embed best practice systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee end to end project delivery including planning, scheduling, budgeting and risk management
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across maintenance and construction contracts
  • Analyse and optimise business processes to improve efficiency, productivity and quality
  • Provide hands on involvement and support across key contracts
  • Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders including Executive General Manager – South, Capability teams, Regional Managers, Commercial & Risk Managers and Finance
  • Lead by example in driving Zero Harm and sustainability outcomes

You will be a strategic, operationally credible leader with a strong background in infrastructure maintenance and/or construction

  • Proven leadership capability enabling high performing, empowered teams
  • Demonstrated experience in project or contract management within the infrastructure sector
  • Commercial management experience in maintenance and/or construction
  • Experience managing a pipeline of opportunities including pre-position and pre-bid activity
  • Demonstrated business development experience in a commercial environment
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse internal and external stakeholders
