Under the supervision of the Events Manager and Assistant Manager, the part-time Special Events Worker helps execute Fairfax City community events. Duties include event setup and teardown, vendor coordination, volunteer supervision, and ensuring a great event experience for a diverse community. We are looking for a creative, dynamic person who loves event planning, thrives on people interaction, and values community.

The City typically holds approximately one special event per month, although the number of available work hours and positions will vary by event. Employees should not expect a set weekly schedule or guaranteed hours. Some events may require a larger number of workers, while others may require only a limited number of staff.

Examples of duties

  • Assist with event setup and teardown, including tents, signage, tables, chairs, and other event infrastructure.
  • Support vendor coordination, including check-in, site placement, and addressing day-of needs.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to volunteers, helping ensure they are informed, supported, and positioned effectively during events.
  • Greet and engage with the public to help create a positive and inclusive event experience.
  • Troubleshoot minor on-site issues and communicate with full-time staff as needed.
  • Help monitor event areas to ensure cleanliness, safety, and accessibility.
  • Participate in pre-event preparation and post-event evaluation as requested.
  • Serve as a friendly and professional representative of the City of Fairfax.
  • Support the overall success of events through collaboration and adaptability.
  • The duties listed above are intended only as an illustration of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

  • Customer service experience – Friendly, helpful, and patient when working with the public.

  • Flexibility in schedule – Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed based on the event calendar.
