Job Description

TITLE: Special Education Department Chairperson

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of three years of experience as a special education teacher and currently employed as a special education teacher in the respective building

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Principal

SELECTION: The position is filled by the Board of Education upon the recommendation of the superintendent

SALARY: $775

FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

  1. Promote a positive school climate and support a cohesive school culture that values and protects student diversity, advances mutual accountability and sets high expectations.
  2. Provide leadership for special education staff and support personnel by modeling appropriate professional behaviors, using effective communication skills, resolving conflict, creating unity of purpose and providing support and guidance to staff.
  3. Collaborate with county and building level staff to align curriculum, instruction and assessment to foster student achievement.
  4. Build positive relationships with families and the community to support student success.
  5. Provide and support professional development opportunities aimed at improving instructional and related practices to increase student achievement and success.
  6. Support and implement induction and orientation structures and processes to support the success and retention of new staff.
  7. Demonstrate organizational and time management skills to ensure that resources are used effectively, procedures and processes are followed, and timelines are met.
  8. Assist building level administrators with scheduling, verifying the IEP with student schedules and teachers’ schedules and/or the master schedule.
  9. Attend and conduct meetings to advance the goals of the county, school, and department and to accomplish these functions and duties.
  10. Service on school/county/statewide committees concerning curriculum and instruction and related duties.
  11. Attend conferences and workshops to remain knowledgeable of recent trends, initiatives and requirements and communicate this information to staff.
  12. Communicate the needs of staff to administration and the concerns of administration to staff.
  13. Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as the superintendent, designee, or immediate supervisor may, from time to time, assign.
