Job Description

POSITION:Special Education Teacher - Emotional Impaired � 1.0

LOCATION: Workman Elementary

Plymouth-Canton is seeking to employ culturally responsive teachers who will be able to support and sustain equity-focused instruction for all learners. These educators create high achieving learning environments. They identify and systematically apply differentiated instruction and assessment that improves achievement for all learners from all racial groups.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with the Emotionally Impaired (SE) endorsement. Applicants holding any other special education endorsements will also be considered. For applicants without the SE endorsement, the district will apply for a waiver through the Michigan Department of Education.
  2. An endorsement to work with students who have emotional impairments pursuant to Rules 340.1781, 340.1782, and 340.1787 of the Revised Administrative Rules for Special Education.

  • Awareness of the physical, social, emotional and academic development of the learner.
  • Capable of nurturing the home-school-community relationship.
  • Proficient and knowledgeable in the core subject areas.
  • Able to provide a flexible, stable and pleasant learning environment that is student-centered while maintaining appropriate classroom management.
  • Familiarity with culturally relevant pedagogy and be able to include this pedagogy in his/her teaching practices.
  • Understanding of pertinent learning intervention practices, such as Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in professional learning communities.
  • Knowledge of and practical experience in research based instructional practices.
  • Knowledge and practice with formative and summative assessments to evaluate and improve student achievement.
  • Ability to implement school district curriculum with consistency.
  • Work closely with school leaders to analyze student assessment data and use data to inform instruction.
  • Collaborate in grade level teams to discuss student work, share best practices, and ensure student mastery of standards.
  • Form and maintain relationships with students' families.
  • Participate in on-going professional development in the spirit of continuous improvement.

EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's Policy on Evaluation of Certified Personnel.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus.

Upon recommendation for employment, Section 1230g, as amended, of the Revised School Code requires all school employees to be electronically finger printed for the purpose of undergoing a criminal history background check. Plymouth-Canton Community Schools operates 15 elementary schools, five middle schools, three high schools & an alternative high school program. District maps show geographic attendance areas for elementary & middle school. Students are randomly assigned to our three high schools.

To additionally support our community, the district provides extensive preschool programming as well as before & after-school child care & summer care programs for elementary & middle school students. Over 3,000 full-time & part-time employees work to provide our students with the educational opportunities they need to become productive citizens in a global community.

Parent involvement is a key factor in the success of our students & our schools. District policy 2112 summarizes the importance of two-way communication between home & school & describes the responsibilities of the school & the parents in this process. The district plan titled “Parent Involvement in the School Program” will be printed each year in August.

Each school welcomes parents to Open House in the fall, parent-teacher conferences, evening programs related to curriculum & school activities. Parents also participate on many school committees, volunteer in classrooms, organize fundraisers & help us to provide their students with an outstanding education.

All P-CCS teachers are teaching in areas in which they are certified by the State of Michigan. The federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law requires an even higher level of certification. At the secondary level, these new standards require teachers to possess at least a bachelor’s degree & full state certification & teach only in areas in which they have a major or equivalent graduate degree or a minor & have passed the state exam in that subject.

All P-CCS elementary teachers meet the federal requirements for highly qualified teachers. Parents have a right to know the qualifications of the teachers of their children & may contact their school to get this information.
