Job Title: Teacher � Students with Hearing Impairments

Supervisor: Coordinator of Special Education

Terms of Employment: 190 Days

Job Summary:

Provide instruction, support, and related services to students with hearing impairments consistent with federal, state and local laws and regulations.

Essential Duties

1. Maintain accurate class roster of assigned students.
2. Collaborate and coordinate interpreting services for assigned students, as necessary.
3. Provide specialized direct instruction to students with hearing disabilities assigned to class roster.
4. Assess current functioning levels of students with hearing disabilities.
5. Establish and/or maintain Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for students with hearing disabilities.
6. Establish long-term goals and short-term objectives for students with hearing disabilities.
7. Consult with regular classroom teachers and administrators regarding students with hearing disabilities in their respective classrooms.
8. Provide information regarding hearing loss, educational implications, psychological implications, behavioral implications, tips for classroom teachers, interpreter information/responsibilities, etc. to classroom teachers who have students with hearing losses in their classrooms.
9. Interpret audiogram results for various staff and parents as needed.
10. Observe students with hearing losses in the classroom/school setting as requested and provide feedback to staff and parents.
11. Attend staffing and/or IEP meetings for students with hearing losses.
12. Consult with audiologists regarding amplification equipment for students with hearing disabilities to use in the classroom.
13. Assign and distribute auditory training equipment for students with hearing disabilities to use in the regular classroom.
14. Refer students for medical or clinical treatment as needed.
15. Attend staff development opportunities, as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required)

1. Valid South Carolina certification in special education for the hearing disabled.
2. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and reach with hands and arms; walk; sit; stoop or kneel; crouch or crawl.

Additional physical requirements include the following:

• Physically capable of frequently lifting or moving up to 40 pounds;
• Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus;
• Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time;
• Manual dexterity for the purpose of using a telephone and data entry;
• Read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids;
• Hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone; and
• Speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in person and on the telephone.

Pay Grade: Teacher Salary Scale
