Job Description

EMPLOYMENT TERM: 2026-2027 School Year ( 200 Days)

SALARY: Based on Calhoun County Teachers Pay Schedule commensurate with degree level and experience.

Salary based on experience and education level per CBOE salary schedule plus competitive benefits package equal to approximately 35% of direct compensation.

QUALIFICATIONS: Multi-Categorical Certification K-6/ 5-12 WV Teaching Certification; ALC Endorsement; Option Pathway Endorsement

  1. Holds or is eligible for a valid West Virginia Professional Teaching Certificate appropriate for the assignment in accordance with WVBE Policy 5202.
  2. Meets all West Virginia certification and licensure requirements for assigned grade levels and instructional responsibilities.
  3. Demonstrates knowledge of:
    • WVBE Policy 2419;
    • WVBE Policy 4373;
    • WV Student Success Standards;
    • Individualized Education Programs (IEPs);
    • Section 504 procedures;
    • Alternative Education programs;
    • Virtual learning environments;
    • Behavioral intervention and support strategies;
    • Social-emotional learning practices.
    • Homebound services;
    • Credit recovery programs;
    • Option Pathway programs;
  4. Ability to travel throughout the county as required.
  5. Demonstrates effective communication, collaboration, organizational, and technology skills.
  6. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
  7. Special Education endorsement or certification.
  8. Alternative Education Certification or willingness to obtain and annually maintain Alternative Education Certification.
  9. Training in trauma-informed practices, social-emotional learning, restorative practices, or CPI/de-escalation strategies.

Duties and Responsibilities

I. Instructional Program Implementation

The teacher shall effectively implement instructional programs for assigned students.

Performance criteria include:

A. Demonstrates accurate and current knowledge in assigned content areas.

B. Demonstrates current knowledge of:

  • Behavior management;
  • Social-emotional development;
  • Conflict resolution;
  • Trauma-informed instructional practices.

C. Collaborates with general education and special education teachers to obtain assignments, lesson plans, accommodations, and instructional resources.

D. Modifies instructional plans to meet individual student needs.

E. Employs a variety of instructional strategies to increase student achievement.

F. Utilizes curriculum scope and sequence and West Virginia College- and Career-Readiness Standards.

G. Provides instruction that supports academic success and school engagement.

H. Maintains continuity of instruction when students move between educational placements.

II. Learning Environment and Student Support

The teacher fosters a classroom climate conducive to learning.

Performance criteria include:

A. Follows established school discipline procedures, including WVBE Policy 4373.

B. Maintains a structured, safe, and orderly learning environment.

C. Encourages and monitors student attendance.

D. Supervises assigned students.

E. Provides support for at-risk students within assigned schools when not actively serving ALC students and may be assigned supervisory duties.

F. Collaborates with administrators, teachers, school psychologists, counselors, Student Services personnel, and families to develop and implement behavior support plans.

G. Treats all students fairly, equitably, and respectfully.

H. Accommodates individual learning differences.

I. Creates and maintains an environment that supports learning and personal growth.

J. Communicates regularly with parents/guardians.

III. Instructional Management

The teacher utilizes instructional management practices that increase student learning.

Performance criteria include:

A. Modifies and implements instructional plans.

B. Reviews previously learned material as appropriate.

C. Maintains instructional materials and resources.

D. Clearly communicates instructional objectives.

E. Maximizes instructional time and student engagement.

F. Provides appropriate supervision and redirection.

G. Provides relevant examples, models, and demonstrations.

H. Assigns developmentally appropriate and standards-based tasks.

I. Provides instructional pacing to ensure student understanding.

J. Maximizes student time-on-task.

K. Makes effective transitions between learning activities.

L. Summarizes key concepts and learning outcomes.

M. Encourages students to communicate effectively.

N. Incorporates higher-order thinking skills.

O. Develops productive work habits, organizational skills, and study skills.

P. Provides remediation, intervention, and enrichment opportunities.

Q. Designs, delivers, and assesses standards-based instruction.

R. Integrates instructional technology and digital learning tools.

IV. Student Progress Monitoring

The teacher monitors student progress toward mastery of instructional goals.

Performance criteria include:

A. Collects, maintains, and analyzes academic, behavioral, attendance, and social-emotional data.

B. Follows grading policies and procedures.

C. Maintains accurate and complete records.

D. Communicates student progress to teachers, parents, and administrators.

E. Monitors attendance and addresses attendance concerns.

F. Uses student data to guide instructional decision-making.

V. Communication and Collaboration

The teacher communicates effectively within the educational community and with families.

Performance criteria include:

A. Communicates student progress through entry, review, transition, SAT, IEP, 504, and re-entry meetings.

B. Coordinates transition services back to regular educational settings.

C. Maintains confidentiality consistent with FERPA, IDEA, and district procedures.

D. Utilizes community and agency resources appropriately.

E. Attends Calhoun County Schools ALC Stakeholder Meetings.

F. Collaborates with educators, administrators, counselors, community agencies, probation personnel, and families.

VI. West Virginia Student Success Standards and Social-Emotional Learning

The teacher shall implement the WV Student Success Standards and support the developmental needs of students.

Performance criteria include:

A. Integrates social-emotional learning competencies into daily instructional practices.

B. Supports student development in:

  • Self-awareness;
  • Self-management;
  • Social awareness;
  • Relationship skills;
  • Responsible decision-making.

C. Collaborates with school counselors and support personnel.

D. Supports student goal setting, career readiness, and self-advocacy.

E. Implements developmental guidance activities aligned to WV Student Success Standards.

F. Monitors social-emotional progress and collaborates with stakeholders regarding student supports.

VII. Special Education Case Management Responsibilities

When assigned, the teacher shall serve as a Case Manager in accordance with WVBE Policy 2419 and IDEA requirements.

Responsibilities include:

A. Coordinating IEP development and implementation.

B. Facilitating eligibility, annual review, reevaluation, and transition meetings.

C. Developing present levels of performance, goals, accommodations, modifications, and services.

D. Providing specially designed instruction.

E. Monitoring and documenting progress toward IEP goals.

F. Ensuring implementation of accommodations and modifications.

G. Maintaining legally defensible records and compliance documentation.

H. Coordinating with related service providers and educational teams.

I. Maintaining communication with parents/guardians regarding educational progress and services.

J. Ensuring students receive a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE).

VIII. Alternative Learning Center (ALC) Responsibilities

The teacher shall implement Alternative Learning Center programming in accordance with county Alternative Education procedures and WVDE requirements.

Responsibilities include:

A. Conducting entry, review, transition, and re-entry meetings.

B. Coordinating academic and behavioral interventions.

C. Developing and monitoring individualized support plans.

D. Maintaining academic and behavioral records.

E. Supporting restorative practices and positive behavior interventions.

F. Participating in program evaluations and stakeholder meetings.

G. Collaborating with community agencies and stakeholders.

H. Adhering to the district Alternative Learning Center Plan.

I. Maintaining Alternative Education Certification as required.

IX. Virtual Learning Responsibilities

The teacher shall coordinate services for students enrolled in county-approved virtual learning programs.

Responsibilities include:

A. Managing assigned virtual learning platforms.

B. Assigning and monitoring student coursework.

C. Serving as the primary point of contact for virtual students and families.

D. Conducting and documenting weekly communication with students and parents/guardians.

E. Monitoring attendance, participation, pacing, and academic progress.

F. Communicating information regarding:

  • School events;
  • State assessments;
  • County assessments;
  • Graduation requirements;
  • Deadlines and testing schedules.

G. Coordinating with counselors, special education staff, teachers, and administrators.

H. Developing intervention plans for students demonstrating attendance or academic concerns.

I. Supporting transitions between virtual and traditional educational environments.

X. Homebound Instruction Responsibilities

The teacher may provide homebound instruction in accordance with district procedures, physician documentation requirements, WVDE guidance, and student educational needs.

Responsibilities include:

A. Delivering instructional services to eligible students.

B. Coordinating assignments and instructional materials with school personnel.

C. Maintaining instructional and attendance records.

D. Communicating with parents, students, and school personnel.

E. Monitoring student progress.

F. Facilitating successful re-entry into the school setting.

XI. Option Pathway Responsibilities

The teacher shall coordinate and implement the WVDE-approved Option Pathway Program in accordance with all state requirements.

Responsibilities include:

A. Implementing Option Pathway programming consistent with WVDE guidance and requirements.

B. Coordinating student enrollment, parent meetings, contracts, and orientation procedures.

C. Monitoring student attendance, participation, and academic progress.

D. Assisting students in meeting graduation requirements.

E. Coordinating with counselors, administrators, CTE instructors, and community partners.

F. Monitoring TABE scores and other eligibility requirements.

G. Maintaining all required records and reports.

H. Assisting students with employability skills, career planning, and credential attainment.

I. Supporting transition planning for employment, military service, post-secondary education, or training.

J. Ensuring compliance with all WVDE Option Pathway requirements and reporting procedures.

XII. Technology Standards

The teacher demonstrates competency in educational technology.

Performance criteria include:

A. Demonstrates an understanding of technology operations and concepts.

B. Uses technology to enhance instruction and professional productivity.

C. Utilizes virtual learning systems and instructional technologies effectively.

D. Models ethical, legal, and responsible technology use.

E. Promotes digital citizenship among students.

XIII. Professional Responsibilities

A. Adheres to established laws, policies, rules, and regulations.

B. Participates in professional growth activities.

C. Completes reports, records, grades, and documentation in a timely manner.

D. Demonstrates professionalism in appearance, conduct, communication, and workplace interactions.

E. Supports county and school improvement goals.

F. Performs assigned duties and responsibilities.

G. Maintains certifications and required professional development.

H. Performs other duties assigned by the Superintendent, COO of Curriculum and Instruction, Director of Student Services/Special Education, or Building Administrator.

Selection Process

Applicants must possess appropriate West Virginia certification and licensure for the assignment. Selection shall be made in accordance with West Virginia Code §18A-4-7a, WVBE Policy 5000, applicable WVBE certification requirements, and Calhoun County Board of Education employment procedures. Appropriate certification, relevant experience, specialized training, evaluations, and demonstrated qualifications related to the duties of the position will be considered.
