A Brief Overview
SPD Instrument Specialist is responsible for all duties of Processing Technician as well as performing delegated activities to support the operating room team with day-to-day instrument utilization. Under the supervision of the SPD Leadership team, the Instrument Specialist has direct communication and service liaison responsibility to the operating room. The Instrument Specialist prepares instruments and equipment for surgical procedures by preparing and coordinating case carts for the operating room. They assist with daily instrument turnover needs, the putting away of sterilized instruments and equipment, communicating PAR level needs of peel pack items, and electrochemical marking of surgical instrumentation.

Experience Qualifications

  • 1 year Instrumentation and/or Surgical Technology experience. Required


Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of specific sterilization modalities and advanced processing systems. (Required proficiency)
  • Proven interpersonal skills, effective and concise verbal and written communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. (Required proficiency)
  • Progressive computer knowledge for advanced computerized instrument tracking systems, sterilization, assembly case information, inventory management and individual productivity data. (Preferred proficiency)


Licenses and Certifications

  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician - CRCST - IAHCSMM Preferred


What you will do

  • Demonstrates knowledge of surgical instruments.
  • Performs daily accountability for established inventory levels of instrumentation.
  • Selects & prepares proper instrumentation needed for a surgical procedure in a timely manner following the surgeon’s preference card and pick sheets and places it on coordinating case cart.
  • Responsible for turnover request communication between the operating room and SPD and coordinates that process.
  • Assist with putting away of sterilized instrumentation and equipment ensuring accuracy of inventory locations and tracking.
  • Assist with case cart flow and staging for the OR.
  • Assist with electrochemical marking of surgical instrumentation.
  • Communicate need of instrument replacement and repair.
  • Serve as the point of contact to IUSS processing of instrumentation during shift.
  • Utilizes proper techniques in care and handling of equipment, instrumentation, and other items.
  • Demonstrates the ability to listen and comprehend requests and to respond appropriately in a timely manner.
