Spanish Medical Interpreter, Full-time, First Shift

UC Health is seeking a qualified and compassionate Spanish Medical Healthcare Interpreter for the UC Medical Center.

The Sign Language Healthcare Interpreter is to facilitate effective communication between Deaf / Hard of Hearing (DHH) patients, their families and companions, and the UCH providers and staff. The interpreter will work with patients and practitioners in various medical settings ensuring accuracy, confidentiality, and cultural sensitivity.

  • Provide in-person American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation between Deaf / Hard of Hearing (DHH) patients, family, companions and UC Health staff and providers.
  • Interpret in a variety of medical settings including clinics, hospitals, emergency rooms, and mental health environments.
  • Accurately convey information using consecutive and simultaneous interpretation techniques while maintaining the message’s tone and intent.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA and professional interpreting standards.
  • Facilitate communication that is culturally appropriate and sensitive to the needs of both the patient and medical staff.
  • Use consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation techniques as appropriate for each interaction.
  • Prepare for assignments by reviewing relevant information or patient background when available.
  • Collaborate with the Interpreting Services team to ensure coverage and timely response to interpreting needs.
  • Collaborate with clinical teams to anticipate and respond to interpreting needs throughout the facility.
  • Document interpreting encounters as required by department policy.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development to stay current with medical terminology and interpreting best practices.
  • Associate degree or higher in Interpreting and/or Interpreter Training Program graduate
  • Preferred certification through national governing body.
  • Proficiency in English and the target language(s) with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and healthcare procedures.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience interpreting.
  • Preferred supervised interpreting experience in the medical / mental health setting.
  • Ability to interpret effectively, accurately, and impartially both receptive and expressive, using medical terminology as appropriate.
  • Ability to work with interdisciplinary professionals in a team environment.
  • Comfortability working in the medical field.
  • Flexible in response to changes in service provision demands.
  • Able to maintain professional demeanor in all situations.
  • Experience in problem solving and complaint resolution preferably in a healthcare setting.
  • Prior to being considered, Interpreter must job shadow position for hire for a minimum of 2 hours.
  • Prior to being considered, Interpreter must have a passing score from department administered interpreting assessment.
  • Preferred computer experience with a working knowledge of database entry, Microsoft Office products, and strong attention to detail required.
