General Employment Period:
September through May, for short amounts of time: weekends or three- or four-day time periods

General Work Schedule (days of week):
Generally Thursday evening or Friday evening through Sunday mid-day, but sometimes during the week

General Shift Hours:

In residence

Minimum Salary:
Initial base pay for staff (Teachers and Cultural Assistants) is $100-$400 (stipend) per program. Concordia College students and some out-of-state staff will be paid hourly, comparable to the stipend wage or in accordance with Concordia College policies.


COUNSELOR:

  • Work under direction of dean and designated leadership staff members as part of counseling team
  • Assume counseling duties for individual house/cabin and other appropriate groups; assume leadership as appropriate
  • Participate in large-group and small-group formats; assume leadership as appropriate
  • Lead and assist with activities as assigned; participate in all Village programs
  • Create a safe environment in which participants feel accepted by staff and peers
  • Be attentive to supervising villagers at all times; assume leadership as appropriate
  • Motivate villagers to participate actively in the target language and culture (in the community setting)
  • Manage villager groups to promote safety, minimize injury/illness and meet developmental needs

General Expectations and Responsibilities of All Positions:

  • Be familiar with and abide by specific policies set forth in the policy statement.
  • Be advised that the entire staff of each Village is under direction of and is responsible to the dean.
  • Assist with setting up village and/or preparing for the program.
  • Speak the target language with villagers and staff members as much as possible.
  • Model standards for behavior and be sensitive to the health and welfare of the villagers.
  • Live in community living arrangements, assigned according to sex; nearly all positions include living and sleeping in a cabin or other housing unit with villagers (participants) of the same sex; positions that do not include living with villagers do include living with other staff members of the same sex.
  • Be prepared to use communal showers and bathrooms, assigned according to sex.



Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Spanish language proficiency
  • Experience with young people
  • Skills in related cultural/recreational areas

Preferred Qualifications

  • Age 18
  • High school diploma (enrolled in college)


Essential Functions of all Positions

  1. Emotional resiliency and cognitive abilities to carry out job responsibilities, ability to establish and maintain appropriate professional relationships, interpersonal skills to interact effectively with individuals and groups respecting social and cultural diversity and to maintain appropriate boundaries.
  2. Ability to assist villagers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, injury); possess strength, physical ability, and endurance to maintain constant supervision of villagers; observe villager behavior, assess its appropriateness and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques; possess visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the cabin group.
