International SOS is the global leader in international remote medical services and medical assistance is seeking to employ General Practitioners with at their offices in Midrand Johannesburg on either a full time or part time basis. The opportunity exists for growth into senior medical roles within the organization locally and internationally.

The role of the Doctor is to participate in the provision of international medical support for clients of International SOS. This would include medical advice, health risk assessments, clinical review, referral, coordination of medical evacuation and participation in international medical movements or evacuations of patients. Doctors must be willing to travel, dynamic thinking and have leadership qualities to match the role and requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Delivering front line medical support and treatment guidance
  • Providing direct clinical support and validation of treatment for medical staff working in remote sites
  • Responsible for oversight and governance of medical evacuation and repatriation of patients
  • Interpreting medical situations by conducting a tailored risk analysis of condition vs geographical location
  • Providing telephonic advice to patients, relatives, employers, employees, and other key client stakeholders
  • Monitoring and managing open cases to closure to ensure appropriate medical outcome and financial compliance according to current standards.
  • Liaising with international medical professionals to obtain medical assessments for patients who are hospitalised or being treated overseas
  • Providing pre-travel and evacuation medical assistance in response to customer inquiries, including but is not limited to: coordination of medical evacuation or repatriation services, bedside medical assessments prior to travel and/or provision of health and travel information to clients
  • Accompanying patients on international commercial flights as a medical escort

Required Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery
  • HPCSA Registration for Independent Practice as General Practitioner
  • Minimum of 5 years post Community Service
  • Minimum of 5 years private sector working experience in Private General Practice
  • Previous experience in international medical assistance or remote medical services and/or any training/diploma or qualification in Travel/Tropical Medicine, Emergency Medicine (Dip PEC) and or Family Medicine will also be an advantage to applicants
  • Current ACLS, ATLS, PALS or equivalent
  • Must have a Valid Passport
  • EU/UK other passport advantageous
  • Due to the essential nature of the position, this person must be able to work in a shift environment

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • International Travel Experience
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Additional French or Portuguese language advantageous
  • Effective customer service and telephone skills.
  • Excellent Information and communications technology (computer) skills
  • Effective interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
  • Enthusiastic and motivated with the ability to take responsibility and provide leadership to a team
