Sous Chef (Cook with Purpose!)

Mission Belly Full is a Long Island-based nonprofit committed to addressing food insecurity by preparing and providing nutritious meals to individuals and families throughout our community.

Founded in 2020, Mission Belly Full has provided more than 115,000 meals through the support of our team, volunteers, community organizations, and local partners. Our belief is simple: We can do better.

Position Overview:

We’re looking for a Sous Chef to bring their culinary skills and passion for community to our kitchen. Working alongside the Executive Chef, you’ll help prepare meals at volume, support special events, lead volunteers, and keep daily kitchen operations running smoothly.

What You’ll Do:

• Assist with menu preparation and meal production.
• Prepare, cook, package, and store meals with established recipes and standards.
• Monitor inventory, supplies, and equipment needs.
• Help reduce food waste through efficient planning and storage.
• Support food preparation and execution for on-site and off-site special events.
• Train and guide kitchen volunteers.
• Maintain a clean, organized kitchen to food safety standards.
• Lead kitchen operations when the Executive Chef is unavailable.

What You Bring:

• Professional culinary or commercial kitchen experience.
• Ability to follow recipes and maintain consistency when preparing meals in large quantities.
• Strong organizational, communication, and time-management skills.
• Ability to guide and work effectively alongside volunteers.
• Ability to remain flexible and solution-oriented as menus and program needs change.
• Food safety certification, such as ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification, or willingness to obtain certification.

Nice to have:

• Experience in nonprofit, community-based, catering, institutional, or high-volume food preparation.
• Previous experience supporting or leading kitchen operations.
• Experience working with or supervising volunteers.
• Current ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification or comparable certification.
